🔴African Union: Praise for Algeria’s Adoption of a National Youth Strategy
✅Ms. Hasna Tammam, African Union Youth Ambassador for Peace for North Africa, praised Algeria’s adoption of a national youth strategy, describing it as one of the most significant advances achieved in implementing the Youth, Peace and Security agenda at the regional level.
This came during the opening of the Fifth Continental Dialogue on Youth, Peace and Security, held in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, from August 10 to 12, in the presence of Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, in his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union and African Union Champion for Youth, Peace and Security.
Tammam explained that Algeria, alongside Egypt, Libya and Mauritania, has adopted national youth strategies, stressing that “these frameworks provide an opportunity to strengthen the integration of peace and security dimensions into national policies and strategies targeting youth.”
In the same context, she referred to the third edition of the Youth Diplomacy Forum in Oran, hosted by the city on February 7 and organized by the High Council for Youth, under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, describing it as one of the regional platforms that has placed young people at the heart of discussions on peace, security and development.
At the conclusion of her address, she stressed the need to “strengthen coordination among the various stakeholders and intensify awareness-raising and advocacy efforts, in order to ensure that the Youth, Peace and Security agenda is translated into practical measures and tangible results,” while highlighting “the importance of the role of regional economic communities and regional mechanisms in consolidating this agenda across North Africa.”
The continental dialogue aims to assess progress in implementing the Youth, Peace and Security and Women, Peace and Security agendas, promote intergenerational integration and exchange, and review developments in peace and security in Africa, with a focus on climate- and water-related risks.
The dialogue also examines the relationship between water, conflict and peacebuilding, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with institutionalizing the role of youth and women in resource governance and peace processes. It further seeks to promote inclusive leadership models, strengthen partnerships and coordination mechanisms at the continental, regional and national levels, and formulate recommendations to support the implementation of the Youth, Peace and Security, Women, Peace and Security, and Climate Security agendas.
