The bigger myth: corporate responsibility or recycling ❓🧐

Meet Ahmed Yassin, a Renewables Engineer by training and a waste management expert by necessity.
For | , we collaborate with Egyptian photographer Ahmed Hayman to explore the big question: what would you say on behalf of a planet that cannot speak? 🌍
Swipe through as Ahmed Yassin answers questions about science, power and climate diplomacy.

„My role was to ensure that the voices of the Global South specifically the Mediterranean and North African regions—were heard. I worked to provide data-driven arguments against false solutions like simple mechanical recycling for complex polymers.“

„Because we are fighting over the source, not just the trash. The Like-Minded Countries (petro-states) treat plastic as a trade commodity, while the "High Ambition Coalition" treats it as a health crisis. When you have trillion-dollar industries protecting production levels, "consensus" becomes a tool for delay.“

The Like-Minded Countries (petro-states) treat plastic as a trade commodity, while the "High Ambition Coalition" treats it as a health crisis. When you have trillion-dollar industries protecting production levels, "consensus" becomes a tool for delay.“

„The refusal to discuss production caps. Many governments want to talk only about "downstream" waste management—basically, how to bury or burn the problem. When industry players lobby to keep single-use plastics legal by promising "better recycling," they are selling a myth to protect their bottom line.“

„My message is simple: You cannot export your way out of a planetary boundary. To the blocking states: your short-term economic gain from petrochemicals is a long-term death sentence for the ecosystems your own citizens rely on. Ambition is not an option; it’s a survival strategy.“

„That "biodegradable" plastic is often a trap. In Egypt's environment, many of these alternatives don't actually disappear; they just break into microplastics faster. The vicious alternative is replacing one single-use item with another. The goal is not better plastic; it’s less plastic.“

What would YOU say in behalf of a planet that cannot speak? 🌍

Ever considered leaving your home country simply because the summer temperatures are becoming more and more unbearable, but still weighing the risks you’d expose yourself to by immigrating?

That’s only one of many examples of the nexus between climate and security. Tomorrow, at the Foreign Office in Berlin, the leading global forum connecting governments, international organizations, researchers, civil society and practitioners working at the intersection of climate change, peace and security will take place again. The “Berlin Climate and Security Conference” aims to highlight the need for human security and climate developments to be considered together, in policy making, financing decisions and international cooperations.

Only one of the many sessions that are particularly relevant for the Arab world: “From rubble to resilience: The case for climate positive post-conflict reconstruction in Syria” tomorrow at 2:45 Berlin time.

Can’t join the conference in Berlin? Watch the conference live, with Arabic subtitles, via the link in our bio, starting tomorrow at 9am Berlin time. (🔗 https://adelph.it/BCSC26Livestream).

Clean power is not just a climate priority, it’s an economic opportunity. ⚡️

At the 106th Cairo Climate Talks, senior policymakers, development and finance leaders and industry examine how Egypt can turn its climate ambition into economic benefits and how to strengthen the interlinkages between economic and climate policies.

Opening the evening, located H.E. Jürgen Schulz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Egypt, reaffirmed Germany's commitment to standing alongside Egypt “as the largest bilateral donor to the NWFE programme, Germany has acted as an enabler for substantial private investments in Egypt's energy transition."

Setting the scene, Mr. Hendrik Barkeling, Head of Science and Climate at the German Embassy, drew on Germany's Energiewende, during which renewables grew from six percent of electricity in 2000 to close to fifty-six percent last year.
The event located at the German Embassy in Cairo, featured a panel discussion on “Clean Power and the Economic Case for Climate Action”, which was moderated by Dr. Miguel Haubrich, Head of the Economic Department at the German Embassy in Cairo. It brought together Prof. Dr. Mohamed El-Sobki, former Chairman of NREA and Chairman of the World Energy Council in Egypt; Mr. Amr AbdelAziz, General Director of Mitigation and Carbon Mechanism at the Ministry of Local Development and Environment; Dr. Christoph Schäfer, Country Director of KfW Development Bank; Eng. Ashraf Hamasa, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Energy; and Mr. Saeed Abu Hussein, Technical Director of Heidelberg Materials Egypt.

In closing, Ms. Hannah Brandt, Head of Protocool and Cultural Counselor, thanked the moderator, panelists and guests, and underlined the fifteen-year partnership behind the Cairo Climate Talks, with COP31 approaching and Egypt hosting international climate and environment gatherings in the years ahead.

How do you make 10,000 pages of climate science matter in a room where every word counts❓🧐

Meet Sherine El-Wattar, an IPCC science networking specialist working to connect climate science with the people who need to use it.

„Working in climate is a ‚heavy load.‘ I sometimes envy people who aren’t burdened by this knowledge—people who don’t feel a ‚twinge‘ when they see a water leak or a heatwave. But I stay because it matches my values. Just like a doctor is needed for health or a teacher for education, climate workers are a necessity for the world’s survival.
I don’t believe I’m here to ‚save the world‘ on my own. I work within my sphere of influence to ensure that science is representative and relatable. A ‚win‘ for me is finding that space where people with different opinions can still agree to move forward. If I can one day reach a decision-making level, I will always ground my choices in these values of care and cooperation.“ - Sherine El-Wattar

„The IPCC process is massive. We start with where member states nominate experts to decide the report’s priorities. Because the IPCC is a consensus-driven organization, nothing moves forward unless every country agrees. For the Assessment Report 7, AR7 cycle (Special Reports in 2027, full reports by 2029), my role as a Science Networking Specialist is a relatively new ‚experimental‘ role. I am working for Working Group 2.

While communication teams push info out, my job is ‚outside-in‘. I connect with networks that aren’t typically ‚academic scientists‘—like city leaders and local practitioners—to bring in literature that reflects reality on the ground. We then condense this into a Summary for Policymakers. We use ‚Key Messages‘ for each chapt
