Remembering Evelyne Pourret, a remarkable Swiss pioneer and friend of Egypt. Five years on, her legacy of dedication, compassion, and service lives on.

نتذكر إيفلين بوريه، الرائدة السويسرية الاستثنائية والصديقة المخلصة لمصر. وبعد مرور خمسة أعوام، لا يزال إرثها من التفاني والعطاء والإنسانية حاضراً ومُلهمًا.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that the Swiss Embassy in Egypt bids farewell to a pioneer in creative community service and community development and a pillar of the Swiss community in Egypt. Rest in Peace Ms. Evelyne Porret.
After studying decorative arts – with a specialization in ceramics – in Geneva, Ms. Porret decided to move to Egypt from Switzerland over 45 years ago, where she established pottery workshops for children living in the countryside as well as other workshops in Upper Egypt. These different experiences prompted her to create a pottery school in Fayoum’s Tunis village which has over the years significantly contributed to the development of the community, women empowerment and has put Tunis village in Fayoum in the tourism spotlight.

ببالغ الحزن والأسى تودع السفارة السويسرية في مصر رائدة في خدمة المجتمع الإبداعي وتنمية المجتمع وأحد أعمدة الجالية السويسرية في مصر، السيدة إيفلين بوريه رحمها الله. قررت السيدة بوريه الانتقال إلى مصر من سويسرا منذ أكثر من 45 عامًا بعد دراسة الفنون الزخرفية - مع تخصص في السيراميك - في جنيف، حيث أقامت ورشًا للفخار للأطفال الذين يعيشون في الريف بالإضافة إلى ورش عمل أخرى في صعيد مصر. دفعتها هذه التجارب المختلفة إلى إنشاء مدرسة للفخار في قرية تونس بالفيوم والتي ساهمت على مر السنين بشكل كبير في تنمية المجتمع وتمكين المرأة وسلطت الضوء على قرية تونس في الفيوم لتجعلها أحد المقاصد السياحية المهمة في مصر.

So how? Coffee beans from around the world are imported to Switzerland, where they’re roasted and transformed into premium portioned products like capsules, instant coffee and other high-end specialties, before being exported worldwide.

The country became a global hub for coffee trading and developed a real “Coffee Valley”, bringing together major coffee companies, traders and experts.

Its success also comes from Swiss suppliers of high-precision components. 70% of fully automatic coffee machines produced in the world are Swiss-made.

In Switzerland and Egypt alike, major holidays are often marked by the same tradition: going home. 🚆🏔️🇪🇬🇨🇭

Train stations fill up, roads get busier, and families travel across cities, villages and regions to reunite with loved ones around the holiday table.

The Embassy recently visited École Oasis Internationale for an interactive presentation on Switzerland, its culture and traditions 🇨🇭✨

Students explored Switzerland’s geography 🏔️, languages 🗣️, political system 🏛️, traditions 🎭 and famous cuisine 🧀🍫, while also taking part in fun quizzes about Switzerland ❓🇨🇭 with exciting prizes for the winning teams 🏆👏

We were especially impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful questions throughout the session 📚

A big thank you to the students and staff of École Oasis Internationale for the warm welcome and for such a fun and inspiring educational exchange! 😊🇨🇭

زارت السفارة مؤخراً مدرسة أوازيس الدولية لتقديم عرض تفاعلي عن سويسرا وثقافتها وتقاليدها 🇨🇭✨

تعرّف الطلاب على جغرافيا سويسرا 🏔️، ولغاتها 🗣️، ونظامها السياسي 🏛️، وتقاليدها 🎭، وأشهر أطباقها 🧀🍫، كما شاركوا في مسابقات ممتعة عن سويسرا ❓🇨🇭 وسط أجواء مليئة بالحماس، مع جوائز للفرق الفائزة 🏆👏

🌊✨ Last week, the Embassy hosted “A Nile of Water & Imagination” at the Goethe-Institut Cairo — a talk by Egyptian documentary photographer Roger Anis, moderated by curator Hana El Beblawy.

Through stories, photographs and memories gathered along the Nile, Roger reflected on his personal and artistic journey documenting the river and the communities connected to it. What began as a documentary project evolved into a deeper exploration of water, climate, identity and resilience. 📸🌍

During the evening, Roger also presented his book Where is the Bride of the Nile, exploring the emotional and cultural relationship between people and the river. 📖🌊

The talk was organized as part of the exhibition Melting Glaciers – Water Futures from the Alps to the Nile within the framework of SABBART by EUNIC Egypt.

A warm thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring evening. ✨

🌊✨ استضافت السفارة الأسبوع الماضي فعالية «نهر من المياه والخيال» بمعهد جوته بالقاهرة، مع المصور الوثائقي المصري روجيه أنيس، وأدارت الحوار القيّمة الفنية هنا الببلاوي.

ومن خلال الصور والحكايات والذكريات التي جمعها على امتداد نهر النيل، شارك روجر رحلته الشخصية والفنية في توثيق النهر والمجتمعات المرتبطة به، في رحلة تحولت من مشروع توثيقي إلى تأمل أعمق في المياه والمناخ والهوية والصمود. 📸🌍

كما قدّم خلال الأمسية كتابه «أين عروس النيل؟» الذي يستكشف العلاقة الإنسانية والثقافية بين الناس والنهر. 📖🌊

أُقيمت الفعالية ضمن معرض «الأنهار الجليدية الذائبة – مستقبل المياه من الألب إلى النيل» في إطار مبادرة «صبأرت» التابعة للمعاهد الثقافية الوطنية لدول الاتحاد الأوروبي في مصر.
