International Biodiversity Day was celebrated with a panel discussion.
The Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, in collaboration with the Embassy of Armenia and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), celebrated International Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2026, at UNECA.
The opening remarks were delivered by the moderator, Ms. Elise Nalbandian, from the Oxfam Liaison Office to the AU, and the panel discussion began.
H.E Ambassador Sahak Sargsyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to UNECA, UNEP, and AU, discussed the challenges of climate change faced by both Armenia and Africa. He emphasized the importance of sharing practical experiences and empowering indigenous people for CoP 17, which will focus on integrating biodiversity conservation across key policy sectors such as development, finance, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and fostering commitment and cooperation among stakeholders. Armenia will share its experiences in collaboration with other countries to celebrate CoP 17.
Dr. Karta Kaske, Director-General of the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, highlighted Ethiopia's rich biodiversity resources and the institute's contributions to both national and global development. He mentioned the institute's achievements over the past fifty years. Celebrating International Biodiversity Day is significant for Ethiopia, not only to raise awareness but also to mobilize biodiversity financing.
Panelists, including Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng, Director of the Climate Change, Food Security, and Natural Resources Division at ECA, Dr. Margaret Oduk, Head of the UNEP Addis Ababa Liaison Office to AUC, UNECA, and Representative to Ethiopia, and Miss Workagegnehu, a Representative of GIZ, shared their insights. A question and answer session followed, concluding the panel discussion.

የኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት የዓለም አቀፍ የብዝሀ ህይወት ቀንና የ50ኛ ዓመት የምስረታ በዓል ማስጀመሪያ መርሀ-ግብር በደማቅ ሁኔታ አከበረ።
የኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት የዓለም አቀፍ የብዝሀ ህይወት ቀንና የ50ኛ ዓመት የምስረታ በዓል ማስጀመሪያ መርሀ-ግብር ግንቦት 17 ቀን 2018 ዓ.ም በኢንስቲትዩቱ ቅጥር-ግቢ በደማቅ ሁኔታ አከበረ።
በበዓሉ መክፈቻ ላይ ዶክተር ካርታ ካስኬ የኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት ዋና ዳይሬክተር ባደረጉት ንግግር ኢትዮጵያ በብዝሀ ህይወት ሀብቷ የበለፀገች ሀገር መሆኗን ገልጸው፤ የብዝሀ ህይወት ሀብቶችን ማንበር ከአገር በቀል ዕውቀቶች ጋር አቀናጅቶ መተግበር ይገባል ብለዋል።
"ከአካባቢያችን እንጀምር፤ ዓለማችንን እንቀይር" በሚል መሪ ቃል በዓሉ የተከበረ ሲሆን የብዝሀ ህይወት ሀብቶችን የማንበር ሥራ የሚጀምረው ከአመለካከት ለውጥ መሆኑን ዋና ዳይሬክተሩ ገልጸዋል፡፡ በተጨማሪም ብዝሀ ህይወት ለምግብ፣ ለመድኃኒት እና ለመኖርያ አስፈላጊ መሠረት መሆኑን በአጽንኦት አስታውሰዋል። የኢንስቲትዩቱ ተመራማሪዎች እና ሠራተኞች የጋራ ጥረት ለሀገር አቀፍ እና ለዓለም አቀፍ ሥራዎች ወሳኝ መሆኑን አንስተው ከዕውቀት ባሻገር ሃብትን መሰብሰብ፣ መጠበቅና መቆጠብ ይጠበቅብናል በማለት በዓሉ በይፋ መጀመሩን አብስረዋል።
ዶክተር ተስፉ ፈከንሳ በኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት የእንስሳት ብዝሀ ህይወት ምርምር መሪ ሥራ አስፈጻሚ የብዝሀ ህይወት ቀንና የኢንስቲትዩቱን የ50 ዓመት ጉዞ የዳሰሰ ሰነድ አቅርበዋል።
በተጨማሪም የኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት ከተመሰረተበት ጊዜ ጀምሮ ለ50 ዓመታት የሀገሪቱን የዘረመል ሀብት በማንበር እና ለዘላቂ ጥቅም በማዋል ረገድ ቁልፍ ሚና እየተጫወተ መሆኑን አውስተው የኩንሚንግ-ሞንትሪያል (Kunming-Montreal) ዓለም አቀፍ የብዝሀ ህይወት ማዕቀፍ የያዛቸውን 23 ግቦች በመተግበር፣ ተፈጥሮን የመጠበቅና የመመለስ ሂደት ላይ ትኩረት ማድረግ እንደሚገባ ገልጸዋል፡፡
አያይዘውም ኢንስቲትዩቱ እ.ኤ.አ በ1976 እንደ "እጽዋት ዘረመል ሀብት ማዕከል" ተመስርቶ፣ በአሁኑ ወቅት የዕጽዋት፣ የእንስሳት እና ደቂቅ ተህዋሲያን አካቶ በስፋት እየሰራ መሆኑ ጠቅሰው ኢንስቲትዩቱ የሚያተኩርባቸውን መሠረታዊ መርሆች አስታውሰዋል፡፡
ውይይቱን ዶክተር ካርታ ካስኬ የኢንስቲትዩቱ ዋና ደይሬክተር፤ ዶክተር አብዮት ብርሃኑ የኢንስቲትዩቱ ም/ዋና ዳይሬክተር እና ዶክተር ተስፉ ፈከንሳ በጋራ የመሩ ሲሆን ከሰራተኞች ለተነሱት ጥያቄዎች ምላሾችን ሰጥተዋል፡፡
በበዓሉ ላይ የጥያቄና መልስ ውድድር እና የግጥም ውድድሮች የተካሄዱ ሲሆን ዶክተር ካርታ ካስኬ የማጠቃለያ ሀሳቦች እና የስራ አቅጣጫ ሰጥተው የዕለቱ መርኃ ግብር ተጠናቋል።

ዓለም አቀፍ የብዝሀ ህይወት ቀን በአርሜንያ ኤምባሲ አዘጋጅነት በአፍሪካ ኢኮኖሚ ኮሚሽን(ECA) በፓናል ውይይት ተከብሯል ።

የኢትዮጵያ ብዝሀ ህይወት ኢንስቲትዩት ዋና ዳይሬክተር ዶ/ር ካርታ ካስኬ በዓሉን አስመልክቶ በፓናል ውይይቱ ላይ በርካታ ሀሳቦችን በመድረኩ አንስተዋል።
