As the new year is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and the strides we made in increasing the participation of women and incorporating gender perspectives in all peace and security efforts. We look forward to keeping up the momentum in 2021 and ensuring a peaceful and inclusive Africa someday.

Women and girls are the most adversely affected by conflict and wars. They can also become powerful agents of change and transformation. In Liberia, women have provided the world with a powerful example of how women can be agents for change in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, by using the Peace Hut model. This model provides spaces for women and girls to engage in mediation efforts, serve as watchdogs, prevent gender-based violence, raise community awareness and mobilize on other critical issues in the steps to silence the guns in Africa.

In Somalia, women are actively taking part in peace and security efforts, helping advance the society towards an inclusive and peaceful future. At a virtual roundtable forum organized by AMISOM in November, the Special Envoy on Women Peace and Security, Ms Bineta Diop said that it is pleasing to note that AMISOM has been implementing the UN Resolution through increased women participation across its military, police and civilian components. These hardworking women officers have been playing a significant role in gender mainstreaming across Somalia.

When women participate in peace processes, it paves the way for increased political participation. In Kenya, women actively participated in key processes after electoral violence in 2007. This included the drafting of the new constitution, which was adopted in 2010. The constitution, among others, imposes a one-third quota for female representation in elected and appointed positions.
