PAPS -The Department achieves this through; implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture.

The Political affairs, Peace and Security Department (PAPS) of the the African Union Commission (AU) provides support to efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and stability on the continent. This is a set of functional tools around the Peace and Security Council (PSC), designed to respond, in a comprehensive and entirely complementary manner, to the full range of complex issues inherent in co

nflicts and crises on the African continent;
- Implementation of the Common African Defense and Security Policy (CADSP) which is premised on a common African perception of what is required to be done collectively by African states to ensure that Africa’s common defense and security interests and goals are safeguarded in the face of common threats to peace and security of the continent as a whole;
- Implementation of the AU Border Programme (AUBP), aimed at the structural prevention of conflicts through the delimitation and demarcation of African borders (where such an exercise has not yet taken place), and the development of cross-border cooperation;
- Implementation of the AU’s Policy Framework on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD); and
- Coordination, harmonization and promotion of peace and security programmes in Africa, including with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs)/Regional Mechanisms (RMs) for conflict prevention, management and resolution, the United Nations and other relevant international organisations and partners.

This afternoon, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, convened a strategic consultation with Ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and the A3+ ( , , ) in Addis Ababa. The deliberation focused on reinforcing Africa’s role in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development.

The Chairperson underscored the imperative of enhanced multilateral cooperation to address common challenges and affirmed the AU Commission’s commitment to institutionalising this dialogue platform.

The Ambassadors welcomed the initiative, recognising it as a timely step towards advancing joint priorities and deepening collaboration in pursuit of durable peace and development.
