Helsinki Freedom: Freedom to love

Helsinki Freedom - Episode 3: Jussi - Freedom to love

Dir. Susani Mahadura • @susanimahadura (IG) and Mikko Heiskanen • @mikkoheiskanen.art (IG)

The third episode of the Helsinki Freedom mini-documentary series presents Jussi, a gay Finnish man in his seventies. In addition to his own personal story, Jussi also shares the history of LGBTQ+ Helsinki. The mainly animated documentary shows how massive change can be achieved in the course of one generation.

Yes, we know that us Finns aren’t known for our outpourings of passion or public displays of affection. We tend to be reserved and value our personal space. But our belief in everyone’s right to love whoever they want to love runs deep. In fact, perhaps it runs so deep because love is serious business for us. Love is what motivates us to build a better future and a better city for our children and for all our loved ones. And yes, love is fun too.

The Helsinki Freedom documentaries have been created the Helsinki way, offering a group of hand-picked award-winning directors the freedom (pun very much intended) to demonstrate what being free means to them. Each episode will shed light on some of the many freedoms Helsinki has to offer, from the opportunity to live a secure and balanced life, to the right to love freely, and the chance to make the most of our world-class education system. Not to mention the best freedom of all: freedom to breathe. A new episode is out on every Thursday until December 17, 2020.

Helsinki is a city in which people can trust one another | My Helsinki

"It is not at all unlikely to stand in the supermarket check-out line in Helsinki together with one's favourite artist, or to run into a minister at the swimming hall. Public services are highly rated in Helsinki, and services from hospitals to libraries belong to everyone regardless of their status or wealth."

Finnish society is by many measures one of the most most egalitarian in the world. The same is true of the capital city. Here people are equals and trust the environment they live in. 💎

Helsinki Freedom - Episode 2: Selma - Freedom to feel safe
Dir. Ronja Salmi • @ronja.salmi (IG)

The second episode of the Helsinki Freedom mini-documentary series gives a glimpse of an ordinary day of the ordinary 9-year-old Helsinkian Selma. She loves to skateboard, play football, and knit – and that is hard to miss. Selma talks about her everyday life, including school and hobbies. Her Norwegian mum and Finnish dad are not seen in the documentary but a special story about Selma's mother is shared.

When a visitor comes to Helsinki, they often notice something: how come all these children are taking the subway and walking the streets all by themselves? That’s because Finnish society is among the safest in the world, and its capital city Helsinki is a place where everyone, including children, can move about freely without fear. Plus, we believe in nurturing children’s independence. It’s how they learn to make their own way in the world.
