Denmark is joining the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa initiative as regards a planned expansion to #uganda.
The initial Danish contribution, through Udenrigsministeriet /the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is DKK 37.5 million (EUR 5 million) and seeks to provide off-grid solar power to up to 500,000 people currently without access to electricity in Uganda.
“Despite Denmark’s small size, our ambition is to take leadership for driving a global inclusive green transition. The Danish Government has set a target to contribute to 5.8 million people gaining access to clean energy by 2023. With the Danish support to the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa, we expect to be able to contribute to providing access to off-grid renewable energy for up to half a million people in Uganda and create new decent green jobs in the solar energy sector,” commented Flemming Møller Mortensen, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation.
“We are very pleased to welcome Denmark as a new Nordic contributor to the BGFA programme. As recognised by all at the Climate Ambition Summit a few days ago, bold leadership, concrete actions and innovate financing to swiftly reach scale are more needed than ever to meet the goals we set 5 years ago.”, stated Helle Lindegaard, Vice President, Head of the BGFA Unit at NEFCO.

The project for rehabilitation of the water and #wastewater #treatment facilities in the city of #Petrozavodsk, #Russia has been completed. With an 83% reduction of phosphorus discharges into lake Onega, the community has clearly benefitted from the joint efforts of the Nordic financiers and the local authorities. Now, the modernised facilities fulfil the requirements defined by HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission.
The achieved results led to significant improvements in the quality of drinking water and wastewater treatment. Among other benefits, the project enhanced community health and safety by ensuring improved drinking water quality and reduced environmental load to the water resources.
The project was financed by NEFCO, Nordic Investment Bank, the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP) and the Finnish Government. Read more on our website. Read more at https://www.nefco.org/news/petrozavodsk-wastewater-project-completed/

The construction of a biogas plant at the Lviv wastewater treatment plant was officially launched today with a signing ceremony between the contractor Riko-Cambi and the Lviv Vodokanal.
Representatives from the city, the Lviv Vodokanal, the contractor, European Union in Ukraine and the project financiers participated in the official ceremony. In addition to loan financing from European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and NEFCO the project is grant funded by John Nurmisen Säätiö and Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership Fund - E5P.
The project will result in significant CO2 savings as the methane from municipal sewage sludge will be extracted to produce electricity, which otherwise would not be used, and the produced electricity will make the wastewater treatment plant self-sufficient.

The Municipality of Ungheni in Moldova and NEFCO have signed a loan agreement to modernise and expand the current street lighting network in the city by implementing energy-efficient lighting measures. This is the second project that is being implemented with NEFCO financing in Moldova.
“By upgrading the current lighting system to modern LED technologies, the municipality will achieve significant emissions reductions, energy savings and reduced maintenance costs. Without the NEFCO loan, we would not have been able to start this project, which is a high priority area for our citizens. We are therefore very grateful for our cooperation with NEFCO and the approved financing,” commented Alexandru Ambros, Mayor of Ungheni in connection with the signing of the loan agreement.
“It is very positive to see that cities in Moldova are interested in energy-efficiency investments. This will not only contribute to the development of a modern and improved infrastructure for the cities’ inhabitants but also support the country’s efforts toward a green transition,” said Aliona Fomenco, ESC Programme Manager at NEFCO.

The city of Ivano-Frankivsk and NEFCO has cooperated since 2007 to implement energy-efficiency modernisations in 56 educational institutions in the city and has recently signed a loan agreement for additional financing to the ongoing large scale energy-efficiency project.
The new project phases - phase II and III - aim to renovate additional 44 buildings and are expected to result in further 2,300 tonnes annual CO2 reductions and generate more than EUR 420,000 in annual cost savings.
The first phase of the large scale energy-efficiency project has been completed this year, including refurbishment of a rehabilitation centre and day-care centres No. 4, 16, 18, 23, 33, and 36. The implemented energy-efficiency measures in these 7 buildings will result in annual cost savings totaling approx. EUR 140,000 for the city.
Financing for phases I-III has been provided by NEFCO in Ukraine, the city of Ivano-Frankivsk, Sweden, and Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership Fund - E5P.
