urbanstory fitting room URBANSTORY FITTING ROOM: A private place for collective activism, art and more... This spring urbanstory fitting room is heading towards a new phase.

After a modest renovation work fitting room is ready again to welcome customers and store visitors to encounter the diverse and often critical issues presented on it's walls. This time it will happen in the form of art. On the fitting room walls so far we´ve had changing statements and arguments about current issues considering ethical, economical, ecological, social and cultural questions. We've also highlighted the ideologies behind brands urbanstory represents (Osklen, Veja, Patagonia) and the activism pursued by these companies in their own operating environment and around the globe. Starting from 2nd of April we shall give this space to artists who will continue the previous work by presenting diverse and thought-provoking art on the fitting room walls. These ecxhibitions will go on for five months, ending in August 2013. Each artist will have the space for two weeks and the medias used will range from photography to painting and serigraphy, to sound-art and performance. While the topic itself is not restricted into anything too specific, each artist must make their interpretations on how to work with a store environment and a space that is also literally used as a fitting room. We are hoping to see site-specific works, art as a form of activism and themes to do with urban life to name but a few. The core idea of the world's perhaps first activist fitting room is still there; we want to encourage every visitor to participate, to think critically and to act for collectively important issues. We hope that the thought's provoked in the fitting room at the intimate moment of choosing something for oneself can solely be the moment for more wide-perspective and long-term decision-making as well. Urbanstory fitting room evolves around three main goals: 1) Acting as a counter-power to the merely outlook-centred commercialism and mainstream brand imperialism. 2) Connecting people with diverse backgrounds and spheres as well as different generations in ways that support ethical and sustainable decision-making. 3) Taking action beyond the taken-for-granted borderlines and biases by doing concrete good in different projects. Urbanstory fitting room is located in the heart of Helsinki inside urbanstory; a unique conceptstore mixing ethical design, creative ideas and art, new kind of business and collective activism. urbanstory fitting room @ urbanstory Katariinankatu 1, Helsinki Opening hours: Mon-Fri 11.00-19.00 Sat 11.00-16.00 Everyone is warmly welcome

5 Minutes Of What The Media Actually Does To Women

As a fashion store fitting room we do play a part in this issue. However we urge you all, both women and men, to accept yourselves as you are, and to use our fitting room as a place where you can find your own style that both emphasizes the best parts of you and also corresponds to values you stand for. This is what we call "ethical luxury".

My Trash Your Trash (2013)

Inka Wallgren and Taneli Rintanen

urbanstory fitting room 23.5.-1.6.2013

Roskapöntöissä on muitakin merkkejä urbaanista elämästä; tagejä, töhryjä, tarroja.

My Most Intimate Diary (2013)
(3’46)

Sound work My Most Intimate Diary initiated from curiosity to own consuming habits. For two weeks I collected all the receipts of my purchases, and I found that I mostly buy food. On the receipts, as organised in strict lines and expressed through diverse measure units, the everyday food items started to seem as crucial evidences of the choices that deeply resonate to various ethical, economical, social and embodied motives.

In addition to my reading of the receipts, the sound material of the work consists of the electromagnetic radiation sounds of fridge and cell phone. Since getting the special microphone that records the electromagnetic radiation from my colleague, I’ve been immersed into the mesmerizing buzz(es) of the diverse domestic machines.

Repetition (towards the very numb tautology), swirling, and the shape of the circuit seemed obvious in My Most Intimate Diary. The histories of our consuming, and our existence through consuming, the making of endless choices, are inscribed (besides the receipts) into the curves of our data bodies and the folds of virtual databases. Our consuming vibrates as electromagnetic radiation.

Taina Riikonen is Helsinki-based sound explorer who works by recording, voice and writing.

On the fitting room wall right now:

5 key challenges identified by WWF-UK´s Sustainable Business and Markets team:

1. How to create and promote a developed lifestyle that is personally aspirational, globally fair and ecologically sustainable;
2. How to ensure that economic systems work to deliver this lifestyle and govern markets so that they operate within ecological limits;
3. How to transform key markets so that they operate within their fair share of ecological limits and enable business to provide for a sustainable lifestyle;
4. How to enable business and industry to transform business models, operations, products and services in order to create value within ecological limits;
5. How to minimize the worst ecological impacts of business while this transformation is under way.
