The SUB project has come to an end 🚲💚

After years of collaboration, learning and innovation, the SUB – Sustainable Arctic and Peripheral Biking Tourism 2023-2026 project has officially concluded.
Together with our partners across the Northern Periphery and Arctic regions, we have:

💠strengthened sustainable biking tourism in remote and Arctic areas
💠developed tools, pilots and good practices for destinations and businesses
💠built international cooperation around cycling, nature and local livelihoods

Thank you to all partners, stakeholders and cycling communities who contributed along the way. The results of SUB will continue to support sustainable tourism development long after the project ends.

🚴‍♀️🔧 Strengthening bike maintenance skills in East Lapland!

Bike tourism businesses from East Lapland updated and developed their bike maintenance skills in a two-day hands-on training held in Rovaniemi at REDU. The training was organised in collaboration with the Pyörät pyörimään project.

Key training themes included:
🔹 Gear adjustment and maintenance
🔹 Wheel truing and spoke adjustment
🔹 Brake maintenance

Developing practical maintenance skills supports high-quality services, improves safety, and strengthens sustainable biking tourism in the region.

🚲 The SUB Final Seminar has begun in Kemijärvi, East Lapland!

Today we dive deep into SUB best practices, as project partners share how sustainable biking tourism has made a real difference in their regions. The programme continues with parallel sessions on cycling products, strategic development and skills.

Tomorrow, we continue with hands-on route product development workshops.

Great to welcome SUB partners, guests, and a large group of local entrepreneurs and stakeholders to learn, share and connect.

✨ Hehku 2026 in Salla ✨

This year’s Hehku focused on AI start-ups and their potential for Arctic regions. The East Lapland SUB team joined the event to host a workshop on brainstorming AI solutions and business ideas for biking tourism challenges in East Lapland.

The workshop was led by Project Coordinator Veera Parviainen and brought together local entrepreneurs, students, and international higher education students from across Finland. Inspiring ideas, collaboration and future-focused thinking! 💡🚴‍♀️

🚴‍♂️✨ Exploring the Faroe Islands on two wheels just got a whole lot easier.

A brand‑new map now brings together all cycling routes, roads, and alternative transport options between the islands — making it simpler than ever for cyclists in Tórshavn and across the Faroes to plan their next adventure.

Thanks to the SUB project voucher awarded to Rent a Bike in Tórshavn, this huge map is now proudly displayed outside their shop, ready to inspire riders at any hour of the day. Whether you're a local or a visitor, you can now discover new routes and enjoy the islands in a whole new way.

Great discussions around the East Lapland Tourism Vision yesterday in Kemijärvi!
We gathered at Café Parrunpätkä with tourism entrepreneurs and local developers to explore the future of our region.

✨ Project Manager Sanna Kyllönen shared insights on the current tourism landscape.
✨ A lively panel discussion with Jari Virtanen, Sari Leinonen and Kari-Antti Virkkula.
✨ In the workshop, participants identified key conditions and focus areas for developing tourism in East Lapland.
