32 children celebrated “Ratu Sukuna, Girmit and Rotuma Day” in Nanuku Settlement on Saturday 30th of May.

Madam Roko welcomed them and opened with the song “Sa ka Talei Na Nomuni Loloma” which the children love to sing!

Madam Courtney read the first book of the morning titled, “Nasreen’s Secret Room.” The story is about a young girl from Afghanistan who fills her loneliness with the knowledge that she holds. Through her imagination Nasreen was able to bypass soldiers who forbid girls to attend school. However, she was able to attend a secret school and through prayer Nasreen overcame hardship to find her voice through education.

This was followed by Courtney, Peniette, and Roko speaking about the very special days being celebrated, Girmit Day, Rotuma Day, and Ratu Sukuna Day:

• Ratu Sukuna was a man who although was not allowed in the British army because of his colour, he did not give up but joined the French army, he was a statesman, a soldier, introduced the sulu- vakataga in Fiji, he was the first Fijian to study abroad

• The Girmits came to Fiji and were mistreated and suffered a lot, but they educated themselves and helped build the nation and economy of Fiji

• Peniette spoke about the Island of Rotuma and taught the children a new song in the Rotuman language

Then there was the cutting of the cake in remembrance of these special celebrations. A quiz was held, one for the junior group of children and one quiz for the seniors. Winners of these quizzes won chocolates and chocolates biscuits as part of their prizes.

The seniors were then divided into three groups and were asked to present on one of the special days being celebrated, with the support of volunteers.

The Girmit group was led by Nanise and they discussed the introduction of Indo-Fijian curry to the national palate of Fijians and also showcased the Leonidas, the ship that brought over 60,000 labourers from India to Fiji.

The Rotuman Group was led by Wendy and they drew a map of Rotuma, talked about how the Fikei was made, along with the garland worn by Rotumans known as the Tefui, and the weeklong celebration that includes singing and dancing.

Apolonia led the Ratu Sukuna Group and discussed the different dialects and languages in Fiji alongside the the family background of Ratu Sukuna.

Madam Roko reminded the children of the importance of speaking up and expressing themselves. As the reading session came to an end, the children were gifted with Solar lights from Peniette before collecting their fruits and cake.

A big Vinaka vakalevu to:

1. Peniette for our Solar lights and sharing with us about Rotuma Day
2. To our first time volunteers (Gaylene and Symone) thank you both for actively taking part in today’s discussion
3. Madam Courtney for our Cake, taking the lead role in sharing about Ratu Sukuna
4. Anonymous donor for our biscuits and chocolates that was used as prizes for the quiz

CWM Children’s Ward: Wednesday May 20th

I spent the session with one little boy named Joshua who wasn’t feeling very well, so we sat together and had a quiet chat about his school, friends and hobbies. Afterwards, I asked him if he would like to choose a book and he picked Wonder Earth by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen.

It was such a fun and interactive book. One of the pages made Joshua jump when a lion suddenly popped out of the book, and seeing him smile and laugh in that moment was really special. It turned out to be such a lovely story that not only entertained us, but also really got us thinking and talking together.

The Vunilagi Team were on mission this month at the CWM Ronald McDonald House for Children!

The books were generously donated by Rebekah Mue, whose mother, Madam Debbie Nitis-Mue, had lovingly curated the beautiful collection during her many years as a school teacher. Included in the collection were some of her own personal storybooks for the children to now read alongside parents and Vunilagi volunteers.

Courtney, Louisa, and Nic spent a fun and energised afternoon filling up the bookshelves so that our valued young members can read and be read to during their visits.

Thank you to our Vunilagi team who are strengthening child friendly spaces at the Ronald MacDonald room/house.

Follow our page to see how this journey progresses in the coming months as we do our best to light up the lives of these precious children through reading and activities!

“Hey, my spaghetti’s moving!” cried Mr. Twit, poking around in it with his fork.
“It’s a new kind,” Mrs. Twit said, taking a mouthful from her own plate which of course had no worms. “It’s called Squiggly Spaghetti. It’s delicious. Eat it up while it’s nice and hot.”

On Saturday 25th April, 32 children along with volunteers gathered for a reading session in Nanuku. Akanisi began with a chorus and Roko opened the program with a prayer before welcoming the children and telling them how beautiful they looked!

The children sang “Taura tu na Bula” and “Read your Bible” before Madam Louisa explained to the volunteers what would be done in the smaller groups. The children joined their groups and in loud voices they began to read with their volunteers.

It was so great seeing the Children partake in the discussions as they read, “Possum Magic by Mem Fox and Juile Vivas (An Australian Classic), “King Save, King Waste”, The Little Mouse who lost the Squeak” by Jedda Robaard, “Spot Goes on Holiday” by Eric Hill.

The children were given the chance to speak and they did just that! Anabelle, who came with her parents, eagerly stood up and answered the questions asked by Mr Luke (a first-time volunteer), and this was followed by an icebreaker, which the children enjoyed.

Then it was time for the senior group, who started off with a tray of Spaghetti cooked by Madam Louisa. As the children ate their spaghetti, Madam Louisa continued reading “The Twits,” a chapter book the seniors have been reading for a few weeks now.

It was funny how, while listening to the chapter about “worm spaghetti” (ewww!!), the children suddenly stopped eating, thinking that the spaghetti were real worms! But thankfully, it was only spaghetti pasta! The delicious sauce and cheese were so tempting that the children continued eating while listening to how Mrs. Twit tricked Mr. Twit into eating worm spaghetti (yuck!).

This was followed by an activity where the senior group had to write their own yucky recipes like Mrs. Twit’s worm spaghetti dish.

You’d be surprised with what our seniors came up with: rat nuggets and fries, egg roach curry, cockroach cake, hot spicy rabbit curry, soup rat, spaghetti maggots – aren’t they creative?!

Before the session ended, Madam Roko asked the children to say a prayer remembering the men who had been missing at sea and their children who were present at the session.

She also reminded the children that they are in a safe space where they can talk to a safe adult volunteer. Roko ended by encouraging the children to ask for help when they are in need and to reach out knowing that they are not alone.
There was plenty of food to share and it was a beautiful morning with lots of fun.

A big Vinaka Vakalevu to the:
• New volunteers who made it today, we appreciate your help.
• Vulaca family for our fruits and allowing us to use their book to read to the groups.
• Madam Louisa for the senior session activity and our food (spaghetti and fruits)
• Akanisi for setting up for the session.

Saturday 18 of April was a lovely day with 24 children attending the reading session at St Christopher's Home.

Our theme for the day was kindness and helping others.

Vunilagi volunteer Rachel organized activities and picked out some really wonderful books to read with the children which was then followed by some fun activities.

The children worked in groups and made presentations about the books they read. We love hearing the children speak out loud and explain their answers because it helps them practice public speaking.

The session closed with our usual fruits and we thank Grace from BSP who volunteered with us on the day.

On Friday 17th of April, Vunilagi Book Club senior students had the opportunity to visit the Doulos Hope Ship which consisted of a Book shop that was available for the children to glimpse through.

The 24 Children were assisted by Vunilagi volunteers: Aunty Pearl, Akanisi, Madam Louisa, and Madam Roko with Louisa’s children also joining the group.

It was an awesome afternoon of adventure, books, and fun, and everyone was treated to fish or chicken and chips to take home after the tour.

A big Vinaka Vakalevu to the Doulos Crew for showing the children around the book area, to the volunteers for supervising the children, to the parents/guardians who authorised the children to go on the trip, to Vunilagi Book Club for the transportation costs and opportunity to visit the Ship, and to Madam Louisa for the delicious treat afterwards!

Til next time, remember to uplift the children in your families and communities, guiding them through positive behaviours and teaching them to be kind and wise.

On Holy Thursday, a small Easter celebration took place in the children’s ward, where Vunilagi volunteer Laisa read a pop-up book about Easter. The children chatted about its meaning, including the idea of new beginnings.

Along with fruits, the children enjoyed some Easter eggs, chocolate cupcakes, and cheese sandwiches. According to the CWM staff, it was a really lovely session.

The Vunilagi team loves providing these bubbles of literacy fun for some of the strongest and bravest children we know!

It was a quiet morning at Nanuku on Saturday 28th of March. The weather was favourable and the children gathered for a reading session that was led by Vunilagi volunteer Akanisi. 18 children attended, including two visiting children who were accompanied by their mothers.

The session started with a prayer, followed by two choruses, before introductions were given by first time volunteers and visitors, before Madam Louisa opened with the book titled, “Don’t let the Pigeons drive the bus.”

The children responded repeatedly when asked whether the bus could be driven by the Pigeon or not? What do you think? Can pigeons drive buses?! Louisa and the children enjoyed this book very much and discussed how the Fijian word for pigeon is “ruve.”

The younger groups shared something constructive with everyone and it was noted that the younger children were starting to be more verbal in expressing their opinions on what they thought about the stories they were read.

The senior groups then continued their reading of the “The Twits” and were able to write out their thoughts, the words they learned, and did their best to read even when struggling with some words. Great effort to our senior group and the volunteers who assisted them!

The Vunilagi reading session ended with a word of Prayer and all the children took fruits and sandwiches home.

• A special thanks to Louisa for the delicious fruits and sandwiches, and for bringing excitement and creativity to the senior session
• Thank you to the visiting mothers and their daughters – for the books, fruits and snacks - we loved having you at the session!
• And it was great to have our regular volunteer Nic stop by with baby Elia to visit with the Vunilagi children

Til next time, stay safe and keep reading!

Reading Fun at the Children's Ward! 📚

On Thursday 19th of March, Laisa and Courtney led a super cozy reading session, kicking things off with The Very Hungry Caterpillar! 🐛🍎

They connected the story to our big "Adventure" theme (think Manny Goes on an Adventure) and this week's special value was "patience!"

Here's the cool part – the caterpillar doesn't just p**f into a butterfly. Nope! It takes its sweet time, resting in a cocoon and reminding us that good things come to those who wait. ⏳🦋

After the story? We had a themed activity, of course! 🎨

Now that the Easter break has finished, we'll keep exploring patience with more butterfly-themed fun.

Til next time,

Look out for one another and keep reading and expanding your mind! 🥰
