🇯🇵🤝🇫🇯 The Embassy of Japan proudly handed over new oil spill response equipment to The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji - MSAF under Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP), valued at 100 million Japanese Yen (approximately FJ$1.6 million). The ceremony was attended by H.E. Hiroshi TAJIMA, Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, Hon. Naisa Tuinaceva, Assistant Minister for Fiji Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, and Mr. Savenaca Cavalevu, Executive Chairman of MSAF.
The equipment includes a dedicated FRP response boat, containment booms, absorbent pads, a high-pressure washer, flexible container bags, a crane cargo truck and a trailer. These assets will be strategically deployed across Fiji's key ports in Suva, Lautoka, Labasa and Levuka, strengthening national preparedness and enhancing Fiji's capacity to respond rapidly to oil spill incidents while protecting its valuable marine environment.
Hon. Naisa Tuinaceva highlighted in his remarks, “While this equipment strengthens our response capability, we recognise that equipment alone is not sufficient. Its true value will be determined by how well it is maintained, deployed, and incorporated into Fiji’s national response arrangements. Fiji is committed to ensuring that this equipment is fully integrated into national, divisional, and site-level exercises, supported by clear procedures, regular inspections, and appropriate maintenance arrangements.”
"Today's handover is more than the delivery of equipment—it is a tangible symbol of the growing Japan–Fiji partnership to safeguard the Pacific Ocean, strengthen maritime resilience, and build a secure, resilient and prosperous Pacific," Ambassador Tajima remarked.
This project reflects the strong and enduring partnership between Japan and Fiji and supports shared priorities in maritime safety, environmental protection, disaster resilience, and sustainable ocean management. It also advances the vision of the Lomavata-Kizuna Partnership and Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) vision while supporting Fiji’s National Development priorities and its commitment to safeguarding the Pacific Ocean for future generations.
