From Curiosity to Community Impact: Meet JICA Volunteer Ms. Inoue

As a child, Ms. Inoue was fascinated by a book of world flags. That curiosity led her to dream about different countries, cultures, and the people who call them home. Today, that dream has brought her to Fiji as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) and Dietitian at the Nausori Health Center.

Inspired by stories from her father, a former JICA volunteer in Kenya, Ms. Inoue pursued a career in nutrition and now works closely with schools and kindergartens in the Nausori area. Through interactive games and fun learning activities, she teaches children the importance of healthy eating and preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

โ€œI may not be able to change Fiji on my own, but the children of today have the power to shape its future. For now, I am simply helping them along the way.โ€ โ€“ Ms. Inoue, JOCV Dietitian, Nausori Health Centre

Furthermore, Ms. Inoueโ€™s greatest impact comes from empowering young minds. She hopes the lessons children learn today will be shared with future generations, creating a healthier Fiji for years to come.

Through her collaboration with the School Health Team from the Nausori Health Centre, she is helping to build healthy habits among children and foster greater awareness of nutrition within local communities.

Reflecting on her journey and experiences in Fiji, Ms. Inoue shares the following message with today's youth:

"Take on many challenges and discover what you are capable of. You have so much potential."

Through the dedication of volunteers like Ms. Inoue, JICA remains committed to fostering people-to-people connections and supporting sustainable development through knowledge sharing, mutual learning, and community partnership.

๐ŸŒ‹ USP Students Learn About Satellite-Based Volcano Observation ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ

Students at The University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva recently had the opportunity to learn more about how satellite imagery can support volcanic research and disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Mie Ichihara, Chief Advisor, and Dr. Takayuki Kaneko, an expert from the Project for Disaster Risk Reduction of Widespread Volcanic Hazards in Southwest Pacific Countries held discussions with the students at The University of the South Pacific (USP) Campus in Suva on volcanic research using satellite imagery.

Following the discussions, the Project Team delivered a lecture titled "Volcano Observations from Satellites" to 30 undergraduate students. They also provided hands-on training to five students who selected satellite-based volcano observation as their semester-long practical assignment. ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ“š

The students actively participated in both activities, and the Team looks forward to seeing them develop into future leaders in volcano monitoring and disaster risk reduction across the South Pacific. ๐ŸŒ

The Project, funded by JICA and implemented in collaboration with Fijiโ€™s Mineral Resources Department - Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, continues to support knowledge sharing and capacity development in the region.
