GREEN CHAMPS HONOUR RATU SUKUNA DAY WITH CLEAN UP IN MAKOI

Residents of Karobo Street in Makoi, Nasinu spent their Ratu Sukuna Day public holiday giving back to their community, rolling up their sleeves for a clean up campaign that highlighted the power of grassroots action in protecting Fiji's environment and keeping Fiji clean.

Leading the initiative was President of the Nasinu Women's Forum, Jokapeci Peau Macanawai, who joined residents and the Nasinu Police Mobile Community Policing Unit in transforming their neighbourhood into a cleaner and healthier space.

The clean up also supported the Ministry's Return and Earn initiative, with participants collecting plastic bottles and beverage containers that will be recycled through Fiji's container refund scheme.

Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya praised the residents and community leaders who chose service over leisure on a public holiday.

"Today we shine a light on our Green Champs, ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things for their community. While many enjoyed the holiday, the people of Karobo Street chose to honour the legacy of Ratu Sukuna through service, leadership and environmental stewardship."

Hon. Tabuya said community driven initiatives such as this demonstrate that environmental protection is everyone's responsibility and that lasting change begins at the local level.

She commended Ms. Macanawai and the Nasinu Women's Forum for mobilising residents and creating opportunities for women and families to lead positive change in their communities.

The Minister also acknowledged the valuable partnership with the Ministry of Local Government, Return and Earn Fiji, and the Nasinu Police Mobile Community Policing Team, whose support strengthened the community effort.

"Every bottle collected, every drain cleared and every bag of rubbish removed is a step towards a cleaner Fiji. These actions may seem small, but together they make a powerful difference."

The clean up concluded with dozens of bags of waste removed from the area and recyclable containers collected for processing through the Return and Earn programme, turning litter into an opportunity for environmental and economic benefit.

The Ministry encourages communities across Fiji to follow the example set by the residents of Karobo Street and continue working together to build cleaner, safer and more resilient neighbourhoods.

Communities undertaking similar environmental projects are encouraged to share their stories with the Ministry for an opportunity to be highlighted and inspire others across the country.

If you haven’t registered to vote, your last day is 22nd June 2026. After that no more registration, no exceptions. Let’s go Fiji!

I share my story in this documentary because online shame is real, and too many people are suffering in silence.

In Fiji, news once travelled from house to house. Today, humiliation spreads with a click. It is faster, louder, and impossible to escape.

‘Algorithm of Shame: In the Village, Everybody Knows’ is more than a documentary. It is a wake up call about the emotional toll of online shaming, the dangerous power of algorithms, and the need for more empathy, accountability and kindness in our digital spaces.

I know what public shame feels like. Titles were taken, my name was dragged, and even now there are those who still laugh and try to silence me. But I’m still standing. Humiliation teaches calibration — and I recalibrated, rebuilt, and came back stronger. Now I fight for those going through it, so they know shame does not have to be the end of their story.

Honoured to attend the preview of the University of Fiji Art Gallery at the YWCA Building in Sukuna Park and witness the debut exhibition of a talented young emerging female artist, Hefrani Barnes.

Fiji is filled with incredible artistic talent, and our creative industry deserves greater recognition and support. Art has the power to tell our stories, preserve our identity, inspire our young people, and bring communities together.

I commend the University of Fiji for helping raise the visibility of our local artists and creating opportunities for emerging talent to shine. I hope this gallery becomes a permanent home and platform for Fiji’s next generation of artists. Thank you for the interview on your online radio station The Vox which will soon have its own FM band, FM93.2.
