Good vs. Bad Topology: Why it Matters in 3D Modeling

When I started working with 3D models, topology felt like a mystery.

I made countless mistakes:
- Adding too many edge loops unnecessarily.
- Using too few edge loops on curved shapes.
- Breaking the smooth edge flow entirely.

But here’s the truth:
Good topology isn’t just about “looking clean.”
It’s about how your model behaves in rendering and animation.

This image shows the difference:

1. Good Topology:
- Proper edge loops maintain smooth curves.
- Clean edge flow ensures better shading and rendering.

2. Bad Topology (Too Many Loops):
- Overcomplicates the mesh.
- Leads to artifacts in curved surfaces.

3. Bad Topology (Too Few Loops):
- Fails to capture the curve’s shape.
- Creates jagged edges or uneven surfaces.

What I’ve learned:
- Keep edge loops balanced.
- Focus on smooth, continuous flow.
- Avoid unnecessary geometry.

Mastering topology isn’t just technical—
It’s what makes your models shine in the final render.

Huge city in UE5 with 1,500 unique meshes 🤯

Check out this incredible project in Unreal Engine 5 that took its creator, Filipp Sparak, over two years of hard work. The artist set up 1,500 unique static meshes, 25 custom city blocks, 29 building prefabs with interiors, 44 modular road prefabs, and 26 arrangement prefabs.

Cool time mechanic for a puzzle game

Germany-based indie team kaleidoscube studio, working on Unreal Engine-powered RECUR, shared a closer look at their time manipulation mechanic. The game will be a puzzle platformer where you become an average postman trying to get through the end of the world.
