"I want to appeal to our young people in this country. Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, and other successful Nigerians, we would like to see you come together and use your influence and resources to support the less privileged. The Maybachs, Rolls-Royces, and luxury lifestyles are good, but there is also an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The burden on government is enormous, and nation-building is a collective responsibility." Remi Tinubu

Whether one agrees or disagrees with this statement, it raises an important conversation: should wealthy celebrities play a bigger role in addressing poverty and social challenges, or is that primarily the responsibility of government? What do you think?

What this actually costs Nigeria is not abstract. It is real, measurable, and felt in everyday life.

Nigeria operates as a de facto unitary state while calling itself a federation. True federalism would allow states to retain a meaningful share of the wealth they generate. That idea has repeatedly been resisted because it reduces the power of central control over national resources.

The same tension shows up in the debate over state policing. Local security forces would allow faster, more accountable responses to insecurity. Instead, Nigeria continues to depend heavily on a centralized system that struggles to respond to local realities.

The economic cost is massive.

When security and governance decisions are driven more by politics than competence, insecurity deepens. Boko Haram, banditry in the Northwest, and widespread kidnapping are not separate problems-they reflect institutional weakness.

Investors see this instability. Despite Nigeriaโ€™s population, resources, and talent, policy unpredictability and weak institutions discourage investment. That uncertainty costs the country billions every year.

The nairaโ€™s decline is not just a currency issue. It reflects long-term governance failures where economic decisions are too often shaped by politics rather than performance.

Nigeria also plays a central role in West Africa, but a weakened domestic system limits its ability to lead the region effectively.

And while Nigerians in the diaspora send back billions in remittances every year, they have little influence over the system those funds enter.

Finally, consider this:

Nigeria produces vast oil wealth. In fact, it has long produced more oil per day than the UAE did in 1980.

Today, the UAE is one of the richest and most stable economies in the world.

Nigeria, with even greater potential, is still struggling to convert its resources into broad-based prosperity.

The difference is not resources.

It is institutions, governance, and accountability. A change must not be missed come 2027๐Ÿ’ฏโœŒ๏ธโœŠ๐Ÿฝ ใ‚š ใ‚šviralใ‚ท
