Mid Wales Memorial Project - MWMP

Good evening everyone,

I’m currently in Normandy, going through the American sector, and following in the footsteps of my grandfather’s brother in law. He was a US C-47 pilot during the war, and landed in Normandy after D-Day, evacuating wounded and bringing in supplies.

A truly moving and remarkable place. I visited Utah Beach earlier. Also included some photos from my trip to the church in Angoville Au Plain. This was used as an aid station during D-Day and the following days. Two medics treated 80 individuals - American and German and 1 child. Blood stains can still be seen on the pews.

Visited the National Memorial Arboretum today. If you haven’t been, you must go!

Attached are the photos of the Royal Air Force memorials. Whilst looking at the Armed Forces Memorial (which lists the names of British Service Personnel who have lost their lives since 1945), I found Winton Irvine’s name.

Winton Irvine was the pilot of Hawker Hunter XJ635 which crashed on May 4th 1976, just outside Aberystwyth, and will be the next memorial I get out in place.

We will remember them.

A fantastic day displaying at Welshpool Town Hall as part of their 1940’s weekend.

Was located next to ‘The Longest Yarn’ exhibition, founded and designed by Tansy Forster. The idea was to tell WWII history through highly detailed knitted and crocheted scenes. Hundreds of volunteers became involved. It’s a fantastic project.

Today I was lucky to meet new people, spread the word of the Mid Wales Memorial Project, and ultimately ensure those who lost their lives in air crashes throughout the region, have their memories continue.

I shall be attending Welshpool 1940’s weekend tomorrow, with my display and various items about my families wartime service.

I will be located in the Town Hall as I was last year.

Another fantastic talk/presentation carried out today, this time at the Aberystwyth 50 forum.

Fantastic bunch of people and a real interest in why and how I started the Mid Wales Memorial Project.

I’m very thankful to say it raised £124 in donations! Thank you so much!

Today marks 82 years since the beginning of Operation Market Garden.

In a very risky plan, designed to shorten the war by many months and secure a route directly into Germany, airborne forces of the US 82nd, 101st Airborne and the British 1st Airborne Divisions (supported by the Polish 1st Parachute brigade) would be dropped at points to secure a number of bridges throughout the Netherlands. A force of the British ### corps would then drive to link up the bridges.

This operation became known as ‘A bridge too far’ and ultimately the operation failed when ### corps were unable to get through to the last bridge, held by the British paratroopers.

Allied killed, wounded and missing amounted to over 17,000 men, with nearly the entire British 1st Parachute Division wiped out.

Attended the Ponterwyd Fayre this afternoon. Had some great chats with people about their family members service, and had some donations so thank you very much!

To me, it’s not about just a memorial. It’s about making people talk, share their stories or stories of family members, and making sure names are never forgotten!
