We are responsible for the armed protection of civil nuclear facilities and materials whether they are on site or in transit, and other, non-nuclear critical national infrastructure. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is the armed police force in charge of protecting civil nuclear sites and nuclear materials in England, Scotland and Wales.

Graduation ceremonies are an opportunity to celebrate the future of the organisation but at our recent passing out parade we also recognised our history.

New recruits, colleagues and guests were joined by two former United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Constabulary (UKAEAC) and Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) officers.

Retired officers Bob Helm and Frankie Cox both served long careers as dog handlers at our Harwell Operational Policing Unit (OPU) from the 1970s through to the 2000s.

It was a joy to see them back together and reunited with former colleagues in the force.

During the event, the pair happily shared stories from their impressive careers with guests and were eager to hear about changes in the CNC over the two decades since their retirement. It was the first time they’d seen each other in around ten years so there was plenty to catch up on as they helped us to welcome our new recruits.

Please join us in welcoming the graduating officers of Initial Foundation Programme (IFP) 109.

Our new recruits celebrated their achievements at a passing out parade hosted by Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith in Oxfordshire last Friday.

Our thanks and appreciation goes to our dedicated training teams across the country who supported the development and success of the officers. Although some of our recruits join us as transferees from Home Office forces, many have no previous policing or military experience.

To stand here today as an Authorised Fi****ms Officer (AFO) is an outstanding achievement and we’re proud to welcome the officers to our team.

We wish them all the very best with the next stages of their apprenticeships and their careers with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary.

Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith was proud to welcome the latest recruits to the Civil Nuclear Constabulary. The apprentices have now successfully completed their initial training and are ready to join their Operational Policing Units across England and Scotland as Authorised Fi****ms Officers (AFOs).

After this week’s site-wide emergency exercise, where we tested our processes and protocols alongside our regulators, it feels like the perfect moment to look back at where it all began.

Well... to 1953 at least! 📷

This image captures the people at the heart of Sellafield’s early emergency response, colleagues who were dedicated to keeping the site and workforce safe.

While the kit, technology and scale have evolved significantly over the decades, the purpose remains the same: protecting our people, our site and our communities.

Today, our emergency services include a security guard force, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, a fully equipped fire station with full-time firefighters, medical services and specialist emergency response teams. All ready to respond whenever needed.

Officers and staff from the CNC had a fantastic weekend representing the force at both Tough Mudder UK and Spartan Race UK Scotland near Edinburgh.

Across the two days, around 9,000 participants took on the courses — some for fun, some fundraising for great causes, and others chasing personal bests and podium glory.

It was brilliant to see so many people step up to take on our plank challenge, showing off their determination and competitive spirit. The challenge sparked plenty of conversations about the role of physical fitness in our work and how essential it is for our officers.

Events like these are a perfect match for the CNC. Our recruitment team had the opportunity to speak with attendees about our Mission, the unique responsibilities of our officers, and how joining the CNC offers the chance to maintain and develop fitness through access to our on‑site gyms and the strong work‑life balance we’re proud to provide.

The enthusiasm and interest throughout the weekend made it a real success.

Suspicious activity is anything that seems out place, unusual or doesn’t seem to fit in with day-to-day life. Our specially-trained officers from Hartlepool recently conducted a vehicle check point and spoke to drivers about the importance of reporting suspicious or unusual behaviour, recruiting more eyes and ears for our network of vigilance.

Project Servator deployments are unpredictable and use police resources like vehicle check points to help disrupt criminal activity and keep you safe.
