This autumn South Western Railway will begin consulting on the largest change to the timetable across their network since 2004.

Whilst this is still at an early stage there are several areas that Councillors Josh Brown, Vanda Cunningham, Tom Gracey, Scott Lewis and I, working with our local MP, Dr Ben Spencer, have been looking into to ensure residents concerns and interests are kept in focus.

Residents of New Haw, Woodham and Row Town are fortunate to have two train stations in the local area, Byfleet & New Haw and West Byfleet. Over 1.5 million trips are made by passengers from these stations every year, with trains making over 200 stops at these stations on a typical weekday with services running from around 5:30am till after midnight. This gives local residents a flexible set of options to travel both to and from London and across the south-west.

One of the biggest concerns we have is the potential for a reduction in services at West Byfleet, if the station were to be downgraded to a category 2 station. This would place the service level at West Byfleet (on the south-west mainline) at the same level as Addlestone (on the Weybridge to Virginia Water connecting line) - SWR proposed this downgrade when they sought to remove our ticket office, which we successfully fought against. Now we need to make sure they don’t try again.

Whilst these stations are the most used by local residents, a number of residents choose to use other stations across the wider area for a host of reasons. To that end Dr Ben Spencer has launched a broader survey to understand all residents’ priorities for improvements with the goal of ensuring a regular, reliable and resilient service to help keep Runnymede and Weybridge moving. Thank you Black Cherry fair Chertsey for another fabulous event. It was great to catch up with Dr Ben Spencer and Yolanda Busto-Lopez from Mind Warriors about the incredible inroads she’s making in supporting people in the community. Also lovely to see the Friends of Gogmore Farm Park and many others. It was hot and fun in equal measure!

On Monday I visited Rodwell House nursing home in Row Town to hear more about the proposed Physiotherapy rehabilitation extension. I was interested to hear about the scale of the project - another building to match closely the one that exists, both in style and size. The plans are very thoughtfully put together and the attention to detail of the outside space as well as the proposed underground car park were impressive. The highlight for me is the inclusion of a large hydrotherapy pool which is essential to improving people’s frailty, mobility and in turn, confidence and will be available to use for residents and day patients. It is evident that the owners, Graham Land & Developments and their chosen architects Carless+Adams are well-versed in their understanding of care needs for an ageing population and this proposed extension will be a welcome addition to our area. Today I was delighted to meet with some of the team from The Crouch Oak GP Practice, Addlestone, in Parliament before they made their way to Downing Street to meet with the Department for Health and Social Care, NHS England and the Number 10 Delivery Unit, as part of discussions over the future of primary and secondary care.

Earlier this year I visited the Practice and saw first hand their new triage system and process for booking appointments which ensure those most at need can be prioritised for appointment, either on the same day or within the week depending on need. I was so impressed with the potential to deliver significant improvements in primary care, after the visit I wrote to the Minister for Health Innovation requesting that he meet with the Practice to hear more about their work.

I am delighted their work and innovation is being recognised both locally and nationally, and they also have the opportunity to share their experience and promote their work in Westminster. I hope this will be able to contribute to real improvements across primary care services across the country!
