A fond farewell and a very warm welcome!

This week marked the end of an era as Aldeburgh said a heartfelt goodbye to the wonderful Kim, who has been the town’s fantastic Town Clerk for the past three years.

Kim has been a real ray of sunshine in our seaside town. Behind the scenes, she has worked incredibly hard, bringing warmth, dedication and enthusiasm to her role while helping to keep the town moving forward.

From supporting improvements and navigating the countless day-to-day challenges that come with looking after a busy town, to listening to residents, businesses and community organisations, Kim has always cared deeply about Aldeburgh and the people who make it so special.

Her contribution over the past three years has been hugely appreciated, and she leaves with the very best wishes and thanks of so many people across the town. Thank you, Kim, for everything you have done for Aldeburgh – you will be greatly missed!

As one chapter closes, though, another begins…

A very warm Aldeburgh welcome to Larissa, who will be taking on the role of Town Clerk, and Theo, our new Responsible Finance Officer. Larissa will officially settle into the Town Clerk role later in September.

In the meantime, the town is in the capable hands of Letitia, who is currently serving as Locum Town Clerk and will be staying with us for a while to provide continuity and support as Larissa settles into her new position. A big thank you and warm welcome to Letitia too!

One final enormous THANK YOU to Kim for three years of hard work, commitment, smiles and dedication to our wonderful town.

Wishing Kim every happiness in her next adventure, and Larissa, Theo and Letitia all the very best as Aldeburgh begins this new chapter.

Essential repair work underway at Aldeburgh’s Moot Hall - visitors may notice some temporary changes, as the building’s historic balustrade is being carefully removed from today so that essential repairs can be carried out.

Sections of the timber have begun to rot and now need to be removed and replaced to help protect this important feature of one of Aldeburgh’s most recognisable historic buildings.

The repair work has been discussed with the Conservation Officer, who is happy with the proposed approach. To ensure the repairs can be completed as safely and robustly as possible, the balustrade is being removed and taken to R&J Hogg Builders’ workshop, where the necessary work will be undertaken.

A temporary balustrade will be installed in its place while the original is away being repaired.

It may look a little different for a while, but it’s all part of taking good care of Aldeburgh’s much-loved Moot Hall and preserving it for the future.

East Suffolk Council has announced that, due to the ongoing dry conditions, barbecues and open campfires are temporarily banned on all council-owned land.

This includes campsite areas surrounding council-owned beach huts, and council-owned event spaces.

Please take extra care during the dry weather and help reduce the risk of fires.

In Memory of Former Councillor Peter Palmer, Mayor 2022.

Aldeburgh Town Councillors and staff are deeply saddened to share the news that former Town Councillor Peter Palmer passed away last night.

Peter served Aldeburgh as a Town Councillor and cared deeply about our town and its community. His contribution and commitment to Aldeburgh will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

At this very sad time, our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Peter’s wife, Catherine, his family, friends and all those who knew him.

UPDATE: Dunwich Heath Fire

The Major Incident at nearby Dunwich Heath has now been stood down, but people are being asked to continue to stay away from the heath itself while firefighters remain at the scene.

Crews will continue damping down the affected area, monitoring for hotspots and responding to any further fire activity. Due to the nature of the landscape, fire can remain hidden underground for some time, so keeping the area clear is essential to allow crews to work safely.

While access to the heath remains restricted, Dunwich village and the surrounding communities remain open for business. Visitors are encouraged to continue supporting local shops, pubs, cafés, accommodation providers and other businesses, while respecting all closures and access restrictions.

🚗 Dunwich Road, from Westleton to Dunwich, has now reopened, although some traffic controls will remain in place to support the ongoing emergency response.

Please continue to follow official guidance, respect restrictions and give emergency crews the space they need to work safely.

Sizewell B not on ‘high alert’
Responding to inaccurate media reports that Sizewell B is on ‘high alert’, EDF has released this statement:

"The fire at Dunwich Heath is not currently affecting operations at Sizewell B power station but we are continuing to monitor the situation - we are not on high alert."

Sizewell B has a fully developed and well-rehearsed emergency plan in place which covers a broad range of emergency scenarios, including a fire on site, and can be activated if required.

Power cut:

Due to the wildfire, UKPN has announced a power cut to three postcodes, which they are investigating and fixing. This is affecting 116 customers. UKPN has not yet confirmed when the power will be back on and has communicated with customers. Health Advice: The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released the following health advice - please share information with neighbours, friends, family or visitors:

Residents in areas affected by the smoke should stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed. Motorists who have to travel through the smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

Some of the substances present in smoke can irritate the lining of the air passages, the skin and the eyes. Respiratory symptoms can include coughing and wheezing, breathlessness and chest pain, if you experience any of these contact your GP or call NHS 111.
Chemicals in the smoke can worsen existing health problems like asthma so people are encouraged to carry their inhaler with them.

Due to hot weather, we advise extra precautions:
• Draw curtains to limit direct sunlight heating-up internal surfaces
• Use fans to recirculate air within the house to help keep cool
• Keep hydrated with cool drinks
• Set any air conditioning (preferably fitted with a HEPA filter) to recirculate mode
• Once the smoke has moved away: consider opening doors and windows to allow properties to cool down, being mindful of changing conditions. The smoke may have moved away but it could just be a brief respite and could return. It is important to listen to ongoing public advice about ventilating your property.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fire at Dunwich Heath.

A major incident remains in place following the significant wildfire at Dunwich Heath, with firefighters and emergency services continuing to work tirelessly in extremely hot and dry conditions to bring the blaze under control.

Residents and visitors who were evacuated are receiving support, and thanks have been extended to the many local people who opened their homes and helped those affected during this difficult time. The community spirit shown has been truly remarkable.

🚧 Please avoid Dunwich Heath, Dunwich Beach and the surrounding area. A number of road closures remain in place to allow emergency services to work safely and effectively. If you were planning a visit, please choose another part of the Suffolk coast until it is safe to return.

If you are in an area affected by smoke, keep windows and doors closed. If you believe your home or property is at risk from the fire, contact the fire service immediately by calling 999.

With the current hot, dry weather, everyone is also asked to take extra care when enjoying the countryside:
🚭 Dispose of ci******es and matches responsibly.
🚗 Never park on dry grass.
🔥 Avoid disposable barbecues, fire pits and bonfires.
📍 If you spot a fire, move to a safe place, call 999, and if possible use the what3words app to provide your location.

Congratulations to Suffolk Coastal MP Jenny Riddell-Carpenter on her new ministerial role!

Jenny Riddell-Carpenter MP has been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), marking a significant step in her parliamentary career.

Having represented Suffolk Coastal since 2024, her new role will see her working on national issues relating to the environment, food, farming and rural communities – all areas that are particularly important to our part of the country.

Congratulations to Jenny on her appointment, and best wishes in this important new position.
