Highlights from the the July Parish Council meeting

Dog fouling

West Oxfordshire District Council (WODC) is consulting on introducing a Public Safety Control Order across all public spaces in the District. This would make it an offence for a dog owner not to clear up after their dog. The Parish Council has expressed its support for this. Members of the public can add their comments at https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/communities-and-leisure/community-safety/anti-social-behaviour/public-space-protection-orders/ .

Speed limit review

The County Council is reviewing speed limits on a number of main roads, including the possibility of reducing the limit on the A4020 between Alvescot and Carterton. The Parish Council strongly supports this proposal, as it has argued for it for many years. There will be a public consultation later in the year.

Playground inspection

The playground, playing field and multi-use games area recently received their annual visit from safety inspectors. No major issues were identified. These facilities are regularly monitored by the Parish Council, a task for which volunteers are invited to help. Any adult or older teenager prepared to commit a couple of hours of their time occasionally should contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected] .

Proposed data centre in Shilton

The Parish Council has objected to this proposal on the grounds that it would be inappropriate in this scenicly valuable, relatively isolated greenfield location and would create a dangerous precedent. The application can be viewed on WODC's planning site https://publicaccess.westoxon.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage .

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 16 September at 7.30 p.m. in the village hall. All welcome.

Highlights from the the June Parish Council meeting

Playground inspections
To ensure the playground and playing field remain safe and well-maintained they are inspected twice a month. The Parish Council needs volunteers to help with inspections. Any adult or older teenager prepared to commit a couple of hours of their time should contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected] ,

Summertime safety
Following a number of fatalities, the County Council has issued a reminder to residents of the dangers of going into open water. In the very hot weather we are experiencing we should all be mindful of avoiding too much sun, keeping hydrated, and looking out for neighbours whose health may be more vulnerable.

Car park
The Parish Council has allocated funds for the repair of the car park surface. Contractors are being approached for estimates.

Public footpaths
The Ministry of Defence has been reminded of its responsibility to clear seasonal vegetation from the perimeter path around the air base. If anyone is aware of any other public footpaths becoming overgrown or obstructed in any way, please contact [email protected] .

Planning matters
The owner of the former coal yard has withdrawn his appeal against the refusal of permission to build houses on the site. An appeal against refusal of permission to build two houses in a paddock to the south west of Main Road has been dismissed.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 29 July at 7.30 p.m. in the village hall. All welcome.

Due to Councillor unavailability the next meeting has been postponed until 23 June at 7.30pm

Highlights from the Annual Parish Meeting and the Parish Council

This week saw the Annual Parish Meeting of Alvescot residents, as well as the May meeting of the Parish Council.

At the Parish Meeting a question was raised regarding blocked highway drains in Main Road, which Oxfordshire County Council has been due to investigate for some considerable time. The Parish Council undertook to continue pursuing this with OCC. The Parish Council was also asked to ensure that the grass verge on the corner of the turning to Kencot is kept fully cut. There was discussion of the public footpath around the air base, and it was confirmed that the MOD has acknowledged its responsibility to keep it maintained and passable.

The annual report of the Parish Council was presented to the Parish Meeting, as well as its annual financial report, and a report from Alvescot Charities. These will be available on the Parish Council webpage.

At the Parish Council meeting Richard Munro was re-elected as Chair for the coming year and Dennis Govan as Vice Chair.

An appeal has been lodged by the owner of the former coal yard against the refusal of permission to build houses. The appeal will be held at the District Council offices on 17 June. The Parish Council will be represented at the hearing. Any member of the public may attend, but should register their intention to do so at [email protected] quoting reference 26/00011/APPEAL.

Another planning appeal seeking to overturn refusal of permission to build one house in a paddock to the south west of Main Road has been turned down. There is still an outstanding appeal regarding the building of two houses on the same site.

A village litter pick took place on Saturday 25 April. Numbers participating were fewer than usual. This was felt to be due to people having other commitments on a Saturday morning and possibly insufficient advertising of the event.
