St. John Ambulance NI Antrim. St John Antrim Unit was established on
6th October 1951.

We believe that it is not acceptable that so many people die, simply because no one could administer basic first aid when it matters most.

🌸🚑 A Brilliant Day at the Garden Show!

Today, one of our amazing Ambulance Crews had the pleasure of being at the Garden Show Ireland in Antrim as always, it's one of our volunteers' favourite events of the year!

Despite the heavy rain showers, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the colourful displays of flowers and plants made it a truly beautiful day.

We also had a lovely surprise when our volunteers bumped into our Unit President, Mr Chris Flynn – and of course, we couldn't miss the chance for a photo together!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat and say hello. Your support means so much to us, and we're proud to serve our community every day. ❤️

We're back at the Garden Show all weekend!

If you're visiting, be sure to come over and say hello to the team.

Don’t forget to follow and share our page to help support the work of our volunteers.

Diabetes UK Week takes place from 8–14 June 2026

This week, St John Ambulance Antrim Unit is helping to raise awareness of diabetes, a condition that affects millions of people across our nation .

Understanding the signs, symptoms, and how to help someone experiencing a diabetic emergency can save lives.

🔍 Know the signs and symptoms

Common symptoms of diabetes can include:

• Increased thirst
• Frequent urination
• Unexplained weight loss
• Feeling tired or lacking energy
• Blurred vision
• Slow-healing cuts and wounds

🚑 Different types of diabetes

• Type 1 Diabetes – An autoimmune condition where the body cannot produce insulin. IDDM

• Type 2 Diabetes – The body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin it makes does not work effectively. NIDDM

• Gestational Diabetes – Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after birth, but can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Did you know that….

Children can develop Type 1 Diabetes at any time – Parents don’t ignore signs of

The 4Ts of Type 1 Diabetes are:

😴1. Tired - feeling more tired than usual

🚰2. Thirsty - child being really thirsty

🚽3. Toilet - going to the loo a lot, bedwetting starts unexpectedly

⚖️4. Thinner - losing weight or looking thinner

🤝 How can you help someone?

If someone with diabetes becomes unwell:

✅ Stay calm and ask if they have diabetes.
✅ Help them check their blood sugar levels if they are able.
✅ If they are conscious and have low blood sugar, offer a sugary drink or glucose tablets.
✅ If they do not improve, become confused, unconscious, or you are unsure what is wrong, call 999 immediately and monitor them until help arrives.

🩸 Testing blood sugars

Many people with diabetes regularly monitor their blood glucose levels using finger-scratch tests or continuous glucose monitoring devices. Knowing how these work can help first aiders provide the right support during an emergency.

Supporting our community

Diabetes can affect anyone, and understanding the condition helps create safer communities. By learning the signs and knowing what to do, we can all play a part in helping those living with diabetes.

Together, we can raise awareness, promote understanding, and make a difference this Diabetes Week UK.

Happy Monday Everyone,

Our Wonderful Volunteers braved the heavy rain showers and came for a fun filled night of Training 🚑

We must admit we really do have an amazing group of volunteers, always eager to train and support one another.

Tonight's training session focused on the ZOLL defibrillator, giving our volunteers the opportunity to build their skills and confidence in using this vital lifesaving equipment.

The evening included teaching from our fabulous Trainers on how to use this amazing piece of equipment, and the opportunity to have some practical hands-on training, covering the operation of the device, following its prompts, and the importance of delivering effective CPR alongside early defibrillation.

Regular training like this helps ensure that our volunteers are always prepared to provide the best possible care when it matters most.

👏 Thank you to everyone who attended and took part in another great training night.

But tonight we finished our training with a difference. We just couldn’t let our Unit Leader celebrate her birthday tomorrow without us sneaking in a Happy Birthday and of course we had to finish the night with some yummy cake.

At Antrim Unit we believe to live in the moment, Celebrate moments. We appreciate one another, we work together as a team, train as a team and we love any excuse to enjoy some yummy treats.

Happy Saturday Everyone! ☀️🚑

It may be Day 6 of our Volunteers' Week celebrations, but our St John Ambulance Antrim Unit volunteers have been busy out on duty today!

We had an amazing crew attending the St John Youth Colour Run. What a fantastic, colourful event it was! 🌈🎉 Huge congratulations to everyone who took part. Even the heavy rain showers couldn't dampen the fun and enthusiasm shown by all involved.

We also had a second ambulance crew providing cover at the Special Olympics at Antrim Forum. Every single participant was incredible, and we want to say a massive well done to them all and to their dedicated coaches. Your determination and achievements are truly inspiring. 🏅👏

While our two ambulance crews were out supporting the community, some of our fantastic St John Ambulance Antrim Unit Trainers were welcoming potential new volunteers as they began the first day of their First Aid course at our unit. 🚑📚

This is always an exciting time for us, knowing that after their learning, training and assessments, they will soon be out and about supporting our local community. We wish each of them the very best over the coming weeks—we just know they are going to do amazing!

Have a wonderful Saturday evening from everyone at St John Ambulance Antrim Unit.

Remember to give our page a follow and a share.

Our Volunteers’ Week 2026 Continue – Night 5:

As part of Volunteers' Week, a time dedicated to recognising the incredible people who give their time, skills and passion to support their communities, tonight we want to shine a spotlight on someone whose dedication often happens behind the scenes.

Volunteers’ Week celebrates those whose commitment makes organisations possible, and few people embody that more than our Unit Leader Trish Brady.

Behind every successful St John Ambulance Unit is someone carrying an enormous responsibility.

The role of Unit Leader brings accountability, leadership, and countless hours of work to ensure everything runs smoothly. In the busyness of day-to-day volunteering, much of that effort can go unseen, but it should never go unrecognised.

This October 2026, St John Ambulance Antrim Unit will celebrate a very special milestone. More than 32 years ago, the Antrim Guardian published an appeal from our local unit, where volunteers pleaded for a permanent place to call home.

For decades, that dream remained just that—a dream.

Then, within the last few years, it finally became a reality.

Today, our volunteers have a forever home: a base where training can take place, equipment can be stored, and both of our ambulances can be maintained under one roof. It is a place that provides stability, opportunity, and a foundation for future generations of volunteers.

The journey to get here was far from easy. Since 2018 alone, the unit has moved six times. Each move brought uncertainty, challenges, and obstacles to overcome.

Throughout every setback and every transition, one person remained determined to see that dream become a reality. Trish.

For many years, Trish has been part of the Antrim Unit family. Her commitment, perseverance, and unwavering belief in the future of the unit have helped shape what Antrim Unit is today.

During her time with the unit, Antrim has secured its forever home and welcomed a brand-new ambulance, meaning the unit now proudly operates two ambulances in service to our community.

But beyond the buildings and vehicles, Trish's greatest contribution has been her commitment to people.

She tirelessly advocates for volunteers, encourages them to achieve their potential, and walks alongside them throughout their volunteering journey. She is always there to support, guide, and champion those who give their time to serve others.

Tonight, on behalf of everyone at St John Ambulance Antrim Unit, we simply want to say:

Thank you, Trish.

Thank you for the countless hours, the determination, the leadership, and the sacrifices made behind the scenes. Thank you for never giving up on the vision for our unit.

Thank you for supporting generations of volunteers and helping build the strong, welcoming, and successful unit we are proud to be part of today.

Your hard work may often happen quietly, but it has never gone unnoticed.

Thank you for everything you have done, and continue to do, for our volunteers, our unit, and our community. 💚🌟

30 Years Service

Yesterday Ruth received her Fourth Service Bar signifying over 30years of Voluntary service within St John Ambulance Northern Ireland.

In that time Ruth held many roles, from Duty Co-ordinator, Treasurer, Trainer and Assessor culminating in becoming a Unit Manager. She was Emergency Ambulance Crew, a cycle responder at events and a Mental Health First Aider.

Being in an organisation for over 30 years, Ruth representing Northern Ireland in National and International First Aid Competitions.

Sadly Ruth has made a very difficult decision to leave St John Ambulance. Not a decision made easily.

All volunteers within Antrim will miss Ruth at our weekly meetings and out at events.
Ruth was also engaging to helping new volunteers develop their skills & knowledge.

We know lots of volunteers from around the various units (Belmont & YMCA) will also miss Ruth.

We wish Ruth the very best in all she does.
