This week our crew carried out RTC (Road Traffic Collision) training, focusing on a safe and systematic approach to vehicle extrication.

The scenario began with stabilising the vehicle to create a safe working platform, followed by effective glass management. Crews then started to peel and reveal to expose internal components such as airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, strengthened steel pillars and wiring before utilising our PRE combi-tool (Powered Rescue Equipment – battery cutter/spreader) to practise controlled cutting and spreading techniques.

Our new recruits continue to be put through their paces on the drill yard. This week they carried out confined pitch drills using the 135 ladder to access the third floor of the tower, followed by a basic pump drill to reinforce essential firefighting skills.

In Memoriam – Robert “Bobby” Cu***ng

It is with great respect and deep sorrow that we mark the passing of Robert “Bobby” Cu***ng, who died on Sunday, 17th August, aged 74.

Bobby dedicated over 40 years of distinguished service to the fire service. He began his career in 1971 with the South Western Area Fire Brigade and went on to serve with Strathclyde Fire Brigade and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, rising through the ranks to retire with honour as a Watch Commander. Based at Ayr Fire Station as a retained firefighter, Bobby committed himself fully to the protection of his community, always leading with courage, professionalism, and pride.

Firefighting was more than a vocation for Bobby – it was a family tradition. Over the years, he served proudly alongside his father, brother, and son, making his contribution to the service truly generational.

Bobby will be remembered not only for his dedication and leadership, but also for his warmth, humility, and the respect he showed to all. A true gentleman, he embodied the very best values of the fire service.

On behalf of his colleagues, past and present, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest easy, Bobby. Your duty is done.

Mondays drill night had the crew rigging up a dam and with use of an LPP (Light Portable Pump) allowed them to get a main jet to work. This was followed by a ladder drill with a jet carried aloft, advancing the hose through the floors of the tower.
