Yesterday we hosted our second 999 day at Ayr Community Fire Station. This time pupils from St John’s and Newton Primary had the opportunity to experience some of the work we do in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Big thanks to Luc from the Scottish Ambulance Service for taking the time to speak to the children about the amazing work you do.

SFRS statistics show that in 2024-25 there were 459 accidental dwelling fires where impairment through alcohol or drugs was seen as a contributory factor.

If you’re tired, have been drinking, or taking drugs, you will be less alert to the signs of fire. You are more likely to fall asleep. You are less likely to wake up if a fire does start.

Avoid cooking. Instead prepare a cold snack or buy carry out food.

SAFETY ADVICE: INFLATABLES IN COASTAL WATERS

Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team has responded to several incidents in recent days involving inflatables being blown offshore. Many inflatables are not designed for sea use and can quickly become dangerous in the wrong conditions.

If you’re visiting the coast and plan to use inflatables, please follow this guidance:

-Check the weather — offshore winds can carry you out to sea in seconds.

-Wear a lifejacket or PFD at all times.

-Carry a mobile phone or means of calling for help in a waterproof pouch.

-Mark your inflatable/board with a means to identify you as the owner – Order free labels here: https://mca-ws.apsmos.com/ViewProduct.html?sp=Swaterprooflabels

-If you get into difficulty, call for help immediately by dialing 999 and asking for the coastguard

-Most importantly, Stay with your inflatable/board! Do not try and swim back to shore

Good weather is forecast through the week, but offshore winds are also expected for most of the week. Please stay safe and look out for each other and make your time at the coast enjoyable.

If you see an inflatable being blown out to sea or at a distance which appears further than what you believe to be safe, please dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Troon RNLI launched after reports of person in difficulty near Irvine Harbour

RNLI Troon Lifeboat volunteers were called into action on Friday evening after reports of a person in difficulty in the water near Irvine Harbour prompted a major emergency response.

The alarm was raised at 6.09pm on Friday, 10 July, with the volunteer crew paged for an immediate launch. As crew members made their way to the lifeboat station, Police Scotland officers, Ayr and Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Teams and HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick were also dispatched to the scene.

Troon RNLI’s D class inshore lifeboat Sheena was launched after initial reports suggested a person had fallen from an inflatable that had drifted offshore.

On arrival, the lifeboat crew located an empty inflatable and began searching the surrounding waters alongside the Coastguard helicopter, while emergency services on shore carried out enquiries to establish whether anyone was missing.

Fortunately, it was soon confirmed that everyone had safely made it back to shore and no one was unaccounted for. The Coastguard helicopter was then stood down.

Before returning to Troon, the RNLI crew were asked to recover any drifting inflatables in the area to help prevent further emergency callouts. Once back at the lifeboat station, the crew and shore team prepared the lifeboat for its next service.

Following the incident, Troon RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Jim Redmond urged people to think carefully before taking inflatables into the sea.

He said that inflatables remain one of the most common reasons RNLI crews are called out during the summer months, warning that even on calm, sunny days offshore winds can quickly carry them away from the shore.

He encouraged families to leave inflatable toys for use in swimming pools rather than taking them into the sea and reminded the public that if they ever see someone in difficulty at the coast, they should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We were delighted to attend the Shortlees Community Clear Up Day last week. The Community Action Team were on hand to provide home fire safety advice to those attended and even got stuck in with some litter picking
