Al Carns Warning Shows Scale of Legacy Betrayal

Responding to Al Carns’s comments in Parliament today Jim Allister said:

“Al Carns’s comments in Parliament today throw into particularly stark focus the scale of the Government’s betrayal of those who served with honour in Northern Ireland. For three decades our Army stood for law and order and prevented the Province slipping into the abyss.

“Clearly Mr Carns has a recognition of the debt owed to those who served in uniform which is sadly lacking among those who have remained in cabinet. When you have a former Minister of the Crown warning that legislation risks handing the IRA a victory they were unable to achieve by way of terrorism it behoves the powers that be to stop and reflect seriously about the nature of the road which they are on.”

Lisburn Fun Run Bombing Remembered. Our chairman, Stewart Ferris, laid a wreath on behalf of the Branch this evening and one of our members, Kyle Carse, was piper for the occasion. We will remember them.

Al Carns Confirms What Veterans Have Said All Along About Legacy Proposals

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister MP:

“Speaking on GB News former Armed Forces Minister Al Carns expose what many veterans in Northern Ireland have been saying for years.

“Al Carns told the station that he considered resigning on multiple occasions over the Goverment’s approach to legacy issues and the treatment of veterans. That is a remarkable admission from a man who sat at the heart of Government.

“Most tellingly, he has warned that the proposed Troubles Bill is creating a “hierarchy of truth” in Northern Ireland. And he is absolutely right.

“The fundamental flaw in Labour’s approach is that it seeks to rewrite the past through a process which disproportionately scrutinises those who defended democracy while allowing terrorists to continue peddling a false narrative in which they are somehow the victims.

“Al Carns also made clear that he does not want to see elderly veterans dragged repeatedly through the courts and that he fears history is being rewritten. Those concerns will resonate deeply with thousands of former service personnel and their families across Northern Ireland.

“TUV will continue to oppose any legacy process which places the actions of those who upheld the law on the same immoral plane as those who sought to destroy it. It is time the Government did the same.”

“Al Carns’ intervention shows that the concerns articulated by Unionists and veterans go well beyond those who have spoken out to date. A former Armed Forces Minister within Labour’s own ranks is now making the same points in public and we know he made them round the cabinet table.

“There is growing outrage about this issue across the UK. It’s time the Government listened.”
