Banstead Commons

Banstead Commons Banstead Commons Conservators - manage Banstead Commons under statute. The Commons are: Banstead Heath, Banstead Downs, Burgh Heath and Park Downs.

Banstead Commons consist of four separate areas of common land in the north of the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, namely Banstead Heath, Banstead Downs, Park Downs and Burgh Heath. The Commons are managed by the Banstead Commons Conservators who have a statutory duty to ensure safe and free access of the public to the commons and to protect the commons from damage and trespass. This was origin

ally intended, as much as anything, to protect the Commons from their owners although in this more enlightened age we hope that threats from this direction are unlikely. As well as providing important recreational areas, the open spaces of the commons are important wildlife habitats. Banstead Downs and Park Downs are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), an important aspect of their attraction to a large number of users. Banstead Heath is classified as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance and an Area of Great Landscape Value. In an age of increasing urbanization this imparts certain responsibilities to manage with maintenance of the wildlife value in mind.

๐ŸŒฟ **Tick Awareness at Banstead Commons** ๐ŸŒฟ

As you enjoy the Commons this season, itโ€™s worth remembering that ticks are a natural part of our grassland and woodland habitatsโ€”especially in areas of long grass and dense vegetation.

๐Ÿงญ Stay safe outdoors
โ€ข Stick to paths where possible
โ€ข Wear long trousers and sleeves in higher-risk areas
โ€ข Consider using insect repellent

๐Ÿ” After your visit:
โ€ข Check your body (ankles, behind knees, waist, armpits, scalp)
โ€ข Check clothing and gear
โ€ข Shower when you get home

๐Ÿ›  If you find a tick
โ€ข Remove it promptly with tweezers or a tick tool
โ€ข Pull steadily (donโ€™t twist or crush)
โ€ข Clean the area and monitor for symptoms

Most bites are harmless, but if you notice a rash or feel unwell afterwards, seek medical advice and mention tick exposure.

The Spindle Ermine moth is a small native species whose life cycle creates one of the most striking seasonal spectacles in hedgerows. In late summer, the moth lays its eggs on spindle bushes, where they remain throughout winter before hatching in early spring. As the caterpillars grow, they gather in large groups and spin extensive silken webs, sometimes enveloping entire shrubs in a ghostly white shroud.

Although these colonies can completely defoliate their host plant, the damage is only temporary. The spindle quickly recovers, showing no lasting harm. This remarkable relationship highlights both the resilience of native plants and the fascinating collective behaviour of these tiny insectsโ€”turning an ordinary shrub into a dramatic and unforgettable natural display.

We hosted our Dawn Chorus Walk on Banstead Heath last week, with 16 walkers enjoying a leisurely stroll around the mosaic of habitats across the Heath. The birds certainly did not disappoint, and we were serenaded throughout the morning.

An impressive 39 species were recorded, including some of the UKโ€™s most loved songbirds such as Song Thrush, Willow Warbler, Skylark, Blackcap and Garden Warbler.

Our next guided walk will focus on butterflies.

This week, our volunteer team are proud to be Chalk Downland Champions! ๐ŸŒฟ

With perfect weather on our side, itโ€™s been an ideal day for a bit of tree popping, stepping in to finish what the sheep and goats started.

And the best part? Those stressed root stocks are popping out like a dream

Thank you, Team BCC

Look how lucky we are! ๐ŸŒฟ

Not only are our livestock amazing, but our graziers from the Downlands Grazing Partnership are pretty fantastic too!

By working in partnership with organisations and volunteers, weโ€™re able to conservation graze our sites. Helping create the perfect conditions for some of the UKโ€™s rarest plants, butterflies, and invertebrates to thrive ๐Ÿฆ‹

๐ŸŒฟ Visitor Notice โ€“ Help Us Protect Our Ponds ๐Ÿธ

Last winter, our dedicated staff and volunteers worked incredibly hard to restore and manage the ponds on Banstead Heath, creating a healthier habitat for wildlife to thrive.

Weโ€™ve recently noticed an increase in dogs entering the ponds, which can disturb the water and damage these delicate freshwater ecosystems.

๐Ÿพ We kindly ask all visitors to keep dogs out of the ponds to help us protect this special environment for nature and for everyone to enjoy.

Thank you for your understanding and support in caring for Banstead Heath and its wildlife๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟโœจ Young people making a difference on Banstead Commons! โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know that litter picking can count towards the volunteering section of your Duke of Edinburgh Award? Itโ€™s a simple yet meaningful way to give back, protect local wildlife, and keep our beautiful commons looking their best ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Weโ€™d like to say a HUGE congratulations and thank you to all the amazing young people who have already taken part in litter picking here. Your effort, time, and commitment are truly making a difference! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฑ

If you would like to contribute to preserving the natural beauty of Banstead Commons - take a look at our litter picking page on our website for information on how to get involved ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿƒ:
