Barnacle Hedgehog Rescue Our aim is to help underweight and poorly hedgehogs. We rehabilitate ready to return to the wild Please DO NOT turn up to the rescue, without an appointment.

Many times we may not be there or with a poorly hog. We are unable to take hogs that are not spoken about over the phone first

Urgent appeal…

Another urgent request on behalf of our prickly little friends…….the ground is rock hard and we have another heatwave looming.

This makes it increasingly difficult for hedgehogs to forage for their natural food and all rescues are seeing an unprecedented surge in the number of orphaned hoglets as their mothers struggle to survive.

PLEASE ensure shallow bowls of fresh water around your garden and if possible provide dry kitten biscuits of high meat content to supplement their diets……

We regrettably have to temporarily close to new admissions

We have not taken this decision lightly, but In order to give the best care to our patients we have no choice
We are a small rescue and already well over our capacity
We have not seen so many babies in all our years of the rescue.

We don’t have a date to take new admissions but things change daily
We will keep you updated on the situation

We are here on 07984435031 for advice.
We also urge all finding of hedgehogs that you call us before you intervene.
Not all hedgehogs need rescuing.

Also I understand that many rescues are having to temporarily close due to the same situation but the hedgehog preservation will be able to assist for contacts of those rescues who have space for our little friends

Good morning
We are extremely busy with babies and dehydration.
We have limited space at the rescue.
We ask that you follow the guidelines, as we have had to many mummy hogs brought with babies. But also babies with no mummy.
And adult hogs out in day

Hogs out in day is not always a bad thing
Mums will venture out in the day

Rules
Is the hog
* wobbling?
* swaying ?
* laying in the sun flat out ?
* can you see the hogs eyes open or are they sunken ?
* are there flys over the hog or fly eggs?

All of the above we would recommend picking up the hog with gloves or towel and place inside high sided box
Then call your local rescue
IF NONE OF THE ABOVE ARE APPARENT THEN DO NOT INTERFERE
call the local rescue to you whilst watching the hog
The rescue will then advise what the best approach is

Picking a hog up that is healthy will cause the hog stress and that will lead to other issues

Our Foster Care team work from home where the rehabilitations stage starts after they are off all meds and care at the hospital.
So if we don’t answer straight away leave a message
If we don’t reply with in an hour then please call either the vets. Or another local rescue

Well no posts for so long as it’s been crazy here
Babies coming from everywhere!
Unfortunately when people intervene it’ becomes harder to keep families together but we have been fortunate

But I ask that
If you come across a nest
DO NOTHING!
Call us first then we can advise next stage 🦔

We’re sharing this with a heavy heart, but also with an important message that could help protect other hedgehogs. ❤️‍🩹

Socrates came into our care with no obvious injuries, a bit flat and quiet and found laid out in the garden. Within 24 hours, devastating burns began to appear on their face, nose, mouth, and feet. Our vets were able to assess the full extent of the damage as we feared there could also be severe internal injuries.

Sadly, the burns were so extensive and painful that the kindest decision was to have little Socrates put to sleep. 💔

We believe these injuries were caused by contact with chemicals commonly used in gardens, products that may seem harmless to us, but can be incredibly dangerous for wildlife.

Hedgehogs explore the world through their noses and mouths, and they walk directly on treated surfaces. This makes them especially vulnerable to:

❌Slug pellets
❌Weed killers
❌Pesticides and insecticides
❌Chemical fertilisers

Even small amounts can cause horrific injuries.

🙏 Please, if you have a garden:

✅Avoid using chemical treatments where possible
✅Switch to wildlife friendly alternatives
✅Always follow safety guidance and consider the impact on wildlife
✅Check areas before applying anything

A small change in our habits can save a life 🙏🏻
