📍 This week’s round-up

It’s been a busy one after the Bank Holiday! 😊

Tuesday saw a full Planning Committee meeting in the Council Chambers, with plenty to discuss.

Thursday morning was spent at Rutland Place with the Love Where You Live team. It was a really productive morning, meeting local residents and listening to their concerns about the area. We were happy to be able to assist with some of the issues raised and work towards getting things moving in the right direction.

There was also an update regarding local anti-social behaviour, with steps now being put in place to address the issues raised.

Thursday afternoon brought some very long meetings discussing the future of planning in Barnsley, followed by an extensive and interesting meeting looking at how we can better tackle homelessness in our area.

Then, on Friday morning, it was off to Bakewell for a Planning Committee meeting for the Peak District National Park. This is always an interesting one, particularly as only a small part of the National Park touches our area around Pen*stone.

Another busy week, but lots of important work being done across our communities. 💪

Holding Barnsley’s elected Labour councillors to account.

Labour Watch Barnsley is an independent community watchdog focused on transparency, accountability and scrutiny of local government.

Last night I shared a video showing a group of youngsters fighting and attacking security staff at Barnsley Bus Station. The video has since been taken down.

Whatever the circumstances, this behaviour is wholly unacceptable.

If your teenager is travelling into Barnsley Bus Station to meet up with others to fight, please have a serious conversation with them before somebody gets seriously hurt.

What is particularly concerning is that security staff were also attacked. They are there to help keep passengers safe and should not have to face violence while doing their job.

Barnsley Bus Station is used by people of all ages — including children, young people, families and older residents — and everyone should be able to wait for their bus and feel safe.

Barnsley has always been known as a friendly and welcoming place, and we shouldn’t accept this sort of behaviour becoming normal.

Please talk to your children. Know where they are, who they are meeting and what they are getting involved in. A fight that starts as “just a bit of trouble” can very quickly end with someone seriously injured or facing criminal consequences.

We’ve just had the privilege of meeting Alex’s parents.

Tragically, Alex took his own life at just 13 years old after experiencing bullying at school.

To keep his memory alive, his mum and dad paint pebbles in his honour and leave them in different places for others to find. Those who discover them often take Alex’s pebble on their travels, leaving it somewhere new for another person to find.

Through these small acts of kindness, Alex’s memory continues to travel far and wide, visiting places his family could never have imagined. ❤️

💷 FROM THOUSANDS TO JUST £368!

The figures speak for themselves.

Under Labour, the annual council meeting aka “Mayor Making ceremony” cost taxpayers thousands of pounds — including £8,255 in 2023/24, against a £9,000 yearly budget.

We believe these costs were excessive and offered little benefit to the wider public. Taxpayers rightly expect their money to be treated with respect and spent where it can make a real difference.

This year, under Reform, the cost has been brought down to just £368 — coming £8,632 under the £9,000 budget.

How? By doing things differently.

We’ve ditched the swanky two-course meal and unnecessary extras, while still ensuring that we in Reform have respected the traditions, dignity and importance of the civic office and the Mayor Making ceremony.

Respecting civic tradition doesn’t require excessive spending.
