REFORM TAKE CONTROL OF EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL WITH CONSERVATIVE AND INDEPENDENT SUPPORT

Conservative and Independent councillors have backed Reform taking control of East Sussex County Council.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Kathryn Field said:

“Across East Sussex, more people voted for parties other than Reform. Yet with support from three Conservative councillors and an Independent, Reform have taken control.

It must be clear to voters that a vote for Conservative or Independent candidates can mean Reform in power.

It is also notable that Reform’s new cabinet has no women members at all.

Liberal Democrats will continue standing up for vulnerable residents and fighting for policies that reflect the concerns of communities across our county.”

The final 2026 local election result are in and its our 8th year in a row of making gains.

We are the voice for those who want real change, not dangerous populism. For those who want to build Britain up, not burn it all down.

Thank you to everyone who voted for your local Lib Dem Candidates.

Thanks to your trust, we were able to hold all but one of our existing council seats, and win two more (one of those we defeated was Reform's County Council leader).

We also kept Reform from winning an outright majority on East Sussex County Council.

We will continue to work hard for all of you.

If you need our help or would like to find out more about what we're doing to support local communities, do get in touch.

The Liberal Democrats are on a record-breaking winning streak, heading for an historic eighth consecutive set of local election gains and on track to beat Labour and the Conservatives once again.

We’ve recorded stonking results in Stockport and Portsmouth, taking control of both councils and beating Reform. Many of our best results are still to come in places like Surrey, Sussex, Huntingdonshire, and Southwark.

While those on the populist extremes of left and right just want to pitch groups against each other, Liberal Democrats have a plan to fix what’s broken and bring our country together.
