We Make Events - Northern Ireland

We Make Events - Northern Ireland we are asking for...

1. Government backed COVID-19 Insurance Scheme. Government support for widespread proactive COVID-19 testing for event attendees.

The Northern Ireland branch of a global campaign raising awareness about the economic plight of all those who work in the live events industry and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on their lives. Why – To ensure if local lockdowns happen event organisers will recover costs and attendees will receive a refund
2. Why – to give confidence to attendees and organisers that the event industry i

s safe and COVID-19 compliant
3. A three-year extension to the reduced cultural VAT rate on tickets in line with DCMS recommendations. Why – To stimulate the return of a viable entertainment sector

Until gathering for events is not restricted by legislation, we are calling on the government for:
4. Grants – not loans – made available to businesses in the events supply chain. Why – To give companies the flexibility to allocate financial resources where they need it most, to keep their business afloat and to enable them to keep employees, adding value to the UK economy and culture in the future
5. A specific job support scheme for live events supply chain until the government guidelines change on social distancing to allow a commercially viable return to work. Why - To allow employers to retain highly skilled people in preparation for a return to work; to support the freelance community, including single director companies; and to support all those excluded by the current government eligibility criteria. This will help us to be ready to kickstart the industry and hence the UK economy.

Finally, after over 18 months, we are allowed to return to work in venues across the country with full capacity, seated shows. How fitting that the date for this is the anniversary of We Make Events Global Day of Action, when we lit the country up red!

Today is truly devastating for the live events supply chain. After 15 months with all but no work and inadequate financial support from the Government, this industry is on its knees.

The Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP) has shown live events can go ahead safely, and the sector is ready to put the findings into action, but with audience restrictions remaining in place they are financially unviable. Because the Government has failed to prepare, we remain banned from earning a living, banned from rebuilding our sector, and banned from offering the live events people so desperately want and need.

This cannot carry on.

The week marks a poignant moment: a year since most theatres and events closed due to the pandemic. The and Light It In Red teams are highlighting this milestone throughout the week and encourage you to join in.

This could be as simple as adding a red heart to your profile picture, follow this link here: http://www.facebook.com/profilepicframes/?selected_overlay_id=725116731412843

Our road to normality is likely to be longer than most, and it is as vital now as it was a year ago to raise awareness of the impact the pandemic has had on lives across the industry.

Please keep following both the and Light It In Red pages as we release more over the week. ❤

Hopefully Stormont hear us on Cool FM today

At the start of the We Make Events campaign, it seemed we had better political engagement with our government than any of the other UK nations. Now we are being left behind.

We are asking the NI Executive to talk to us and form an Events Industry Advisory Group to help put together a road map to recovery for our sector.

Wales and Scotland have already done this. Northern Ireland must not slip behind.
