Gatheringleaveshk 一頁舟 Gathering Leaves Hong Kong

連繫社區 connect to community

GLHK @ Belsize Community Library opens on Every Saturdays of the month

“Gathering Leaves Hong Kong” was established with an aim to set up a fixed venue for Hong Kong people living in the UK to have a gathering place. Just like its name 《一頁舟》Gathering Leaves means making friends with books.

“Gathering Leaves Hong Kong” has 3 visions –
1. Promote Hong Kong Cantonese as a language
2. Connect People from Hong Kong and the Community
3. Support the Universal Value of Human Rights

We are delighted to be supported by The Winch, a charity in London. In the Library it manages, every Saturday afternoon, we can set up a small Chinese/Cantonese library and organise activities for the community. This space offers many possibilities. We have done film screening and seminars, and other activities. Every week, locals and Hong Kong friends of different ages come to read and borrow books, watch movies, have a little chat with each other…. Every person we met has a story to tell, an opinion to voice and a dream to share. And the gathering place serves as a conduit for different community experiences, though each time is a new challenge to us. Thanks to Hong Kongers and the community’s support, “Gathering Leaves Hong Kong” is materialized. By being a visitor or volunteer, with you together, we continue to grow and move on.

Humanise - A Maker’s Guide To Building Our World

Book talk

As certainties fade, a question emerges: if democracy could work here—among migrants and exiles—might it work anywhere? Can AI imagine such a future, or will it repeat old exclusions?
Set in a city suspended between memories and possibilities, Demotopia is a political science fiction of human becoming—insisting that even amid disorientation and loss, life will find its way.

新作《Demotopia: an Exploration of Democracy and Artificial Intelligence》, 是他個人首部政治科學幻想小說, 近日在加拿大以英文出版。

The Film: A Ghost Covers One's Eyes

The short film (15 minutes):
A group of young Hong Kong locals and banana boy Brandon Chow, dressed in costumes, tell stories while getting high, forgetting them by morning. This semi-fictional film explores Hong Kong identity within a pan-Chinese narrative being imposed by the Chinese Communist Party. Blending diverse lived experiences within Hong Kong and her international diaspora, it captures the despondency and proud dogmatism that many political dissidents feel amidst Hong Kong’s cultural erosion.

Reflecting Chow's identity as a second-generation Chinese Canadian or "Banana Boy" the narrative blends humour and heartfelt moments to address this political topic and the ongoing evolution of ‘Hong Kong-ness’.

Bio:
Brandon (歷昌) is an artistic research, educator and film-maker based between Amsterdam and Vancouver. He is trained in critical theory at Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, where he currently teaches a moving image course at the Academie Van Bouwkunst. His research led artistic practice focuses on affectual depictions of political violence, archival representations of migrant histories and their movement across diasporic contexts.

Book Talk: Reading Time Difference in the UK

Time Difference (《時差》)is a non-fiction book about Ireland, written in Chinese and following two main threads. One thread explores Irish history, literature, and culture, beginning in the 16th century and covering key periods such as the Home Rule Movement, the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Civil War, and the Troubles. It focuses on how Irish writers and artists responded to their contemporary issues, with particular attention to the seemingly trivial stories that reveal deeper insights. The other thread recounts the author’s personal experience of studying Irish literature at Trinity College Dublin during 2022–2023, his encounters with people, and travels throughout Ireland.

The talk highlights how writers like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett responded to crises through seemingly trivial stories that reveal deeper truths. As a Hong Kong writer immersed in this world, Ki Kwok found echoes of his city's struggles. This illuminates questions of identity and storytelling amid political flux.

It is particularly interesting to share the book in the UK, as both Ireland and Hong Kong were once its colonies, and there are notable parallels in their colonial experiences.
