I’m happy to announce that I have been confirmed as the Birmingham Labour Group Leader.

The Labour Party in Birmingham has worked hard over recent years to turn Birmingham City Council around and I want to pay tribute to John Cotton’s leadership during this time to get the council’s finances back on track. But we understand that voters are frustrated by the pace of change.

We respect the outcome of the election and the message voters have sent. Now is the time for us to reflect carefully on the result, listen to residents, and rebuild trust and support with our communities.

For that reason, our group will not be entering into any coalition agreement or power-sharing arrangement with other parties.

We will continue to serve residents constructively from the opposition benches, holding the new administration to account where necessary while supporting decisions that are in the best interests of the city and its residents.

Vote Labour on 7th May to end the bin strike.

After months of hard work, Labour and Unite have reached a deal to end the strike. The pre-election rules prevent the council from making a final decision prior to 7th May, but a re-elected Labour Council will work to get this deal approved as its first priority.

It’s now clear that whilst other parties have no plan, only Labour can end this dispute and deliver a refuse service that works for everyone in Birmingham

Labour will invest in every area of Birmingham. That’s why this weekend we launched Labour’s plan for Birmingham across all corners of our City.

A plan built on progress, unity and fresh ambition

After being tired of people dividing our communities, Cllr Saima Suleman, wanted to do something positive and created Ramadan Streets.

A space where families can come together, local traders can thrive, and communities can celebrate the richness of our city during Ramadan.

Today we have agreed a budget that will deliver a huge funding boost for the city, putting more money into frontline services for residents and providing a further £130 million on top of that to clean up our streets, invest in our libraries, and tackle knife crime.
