Out doorknocking in Shard End 🌹

Day two of speaking to residents in Shard End following the resignation of disgraced former councillor Alan Feeney.

There will now be a by election in Shard End, and residents deserve a positive future, a councillor who listens and representation that puts local people first.

We’ll continue getting out into the community, listening to residents and talking about how Labour can deliver for local people.

The Ministry of Justice has described the comments exposed by ITV as “despicable”, stating that they are entirely at odds with the standards and values expected of Prison Service staff.

Cllr Alan Feeney has been suspended from his role as a prison officer following the revelations. Yet, despite leaving Reform UK, he remains a Birmingham City Councillor, now sitting as an independent.

His former colleague in Solihull, Cllr Chris Whelan, has resigned. So why does Cllr Feeney continue to hold his seat?

Our city deserves better.

Residents in Shard End deserve a councillor who represents them with dignity and respect, and whose conduct reflects the values of the community they serve.

Racism and Islamophobia have no place in our communities, our public services or our politics. Public office comes with responsibility, and those who represent our residents must be held to the highest standards.

Cllr Feeney should resign his council seat and allow the people of Shard End to elect someone who can represent them with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Birmingham could apply the Middlesbrough Judgement tomorrow and save the taxpayer £400million.

Council officers are not being honest with the Leader and the Cabinet about the options available to them.

Meanwhile the taxpayer foots the bill as the equivalent of one street a month is converted into supported accommodation.

🏡 SHELDON HEATH COMMUNITY CENTRE SAVED FOLLOWING LOCAL LABOUR TEAM'S CAMPAIGN 🏡

I am proud to have led the campaign to save Sheldon Heath Community Centre from closure, working alongside Liam Byrne MP and local residents to secure its future.

From the outset, I made it clear that losing this vital community asset was simply not an option. Community centres are at the heart of our neighbourhoods, providing support, opportunities and a place for people to come together. That is why I fought to ensure this facility remained open for local people.

I am especially pleased that Oasis Hub Blakenhale will now take on the running of the centre. Having worked alongside Oasis for many years, I have seen first-hand the outstanding work they do and the positive impact they have on local people, families and young people across our community.

Their track record speaks for itself, and I have absolute confidence that Oasis will not only safeguard the future of Sheldon Heath Community Centre but help it flourish. This is about far more than keeping a building open. It is about securing a strong, sustainable future for a valued community hub that will continue serving local residents for generations to come.

This is a huge victory for our community and demonstrates what can be achieved when local people and local representatives stand together to protect the services that matter most.
