🌿 Tackling Invasive Species Using Nature-Based Solutions 🌿
We're pleased to be working with CABI and the Environment Agency to help manage one of the UK's most problematic invasive aquatic plants – Floating Pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides).
Floating Pennywort can grow extremely quickly, forming dense mats across watercourses and ponds. This can block waterways, reduce oxygen levels, impact native wildlife, and increase flood risk.
As part of an innovative and environmentally sustainable approach, we have recently undertaken the release of the Floating Pennywort Weevil (Listronotus elongatus), a biological control agent that feeds specifically on Floating Pennywort. The weevil has been carefully researched and approved for release in the UK, offering a natural way to help suppress the spread of this invasive species.
Biological control is an important tool in nature conservation, complementing traditional management methods while reducing the need for repeated mechanical removal. By working with natural processes, we can help restore healthier habitats for native plants and wildlife.
We will continue to monitor the site alongside our partners and look forward to seeing the positive impact this approach can have on our local conservation areas.
Thank you to CABI and the Environment Agency for their support and collaboration on this important project.
