On Tuesday our team chair Lou was invited to an event inside the Houses Of Parliament. This was hosted by for small charities week. It was a really great opportunity to meet with MP’s and to let them know of the work that we and other lowland search teams do. A very hot and sunny afternoon in London but a great opportunity. This was taken on quite a cool day but search dog Weeble knows exactly how to make the most of a cooling opportunity on a search.
The temperatures here are on the up and up. Over the next few days we shall be showing you how our dogs are keeping cool in the heat. Let’s see in the comments how you are keeping your dogs cool too.
The welfare of our search dogs is of the highest priority to us. Whilst temperatures are this high regular training is cancelled and the dogs are only deployed on Callout’s overnight when the temperatures have dropped.

Our ground scent search dogs are trained to follow the trail left by a specific person. They take scent from an article and then follow the trail that person has left, ignoring all other human scent. If a person goes missing and their last known position is a vehicle the dog can take scent from inside the car. Here you can see search dog Hush taking scent from inside the car, locating which direction the person has gone in and then following the trail and finding the person.

It is importantly for our dogs to train finding people in as many different scenarios as possible as you never know what you might find on a live callout so on Tuesday training our missing person was up a tree. Here is search dog Zeus nicely working out where the scent is coming from. Good boy Zeus.

Ahead of the start of Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse some of the two legged members of the team were invited to test one of the dining options for racegoers this week. They had a wonderful time and all returned home with full tummies and big smiles. Thanks to Ascot Racecourse for this opportunity.
