Refugee Voices

Refugee Voices Using their own words, the script tells their stories. Education sessions are available to run alongside the project.

For anyone who has taken part, been involved with or is interested in the Zephaniah Trust's Refugee Voices project - your one-stop shop for updates on the project, refugee/asylum seeker news and campaigns... Refugee Voices is a script telling the true stories of three asylum seekers or refugees who have lived in or passed through Bradford:
Michael, a Zimbabwean teacher and lecturer who came to the

UK to take care of his sick daughter and then discovered it was unsafe to return home;
Jhora, a teenage Rohingyan girl, born in a Bangladesh refugee camp after her parents fled from Burma, and brought to the UK with her family under a UNHCR resettlement programme;
William, member of an opposition political party in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who fled to the UK after he was beaten and put in prison and his brother was killed by government forces. The project visits schools in Bradford and beyond, working with groups of 10-12 students from year five and above to prepare a performance for their peers. The Zephaniah Trust works in partnership with Bradford Action for Refugees and Bradford City of Sanctuary. For more information, contact the Zephaniah Trust on 01274 533732 or [email protected]

⚖️ Despite legal challenges and widespread concern, the Government seems determined to press ahead with the removal of people to Rwanda.

💔 We know from our work the distress and chaos that the threat of these removals has already caused, for vulnerable people in desperate need of safety.

🎒The Government refuse to see the face behind the case when it comes to the lives of refugees. We have already had to intervene to help young people at risk of being deported to Rwanda after being incorrectly assessed as adults.

🦺 The Government claims this policy will act as a deterrent to end the model of people-traffickers - but the numbers of people travelling across the channel since the announcement was made has almost doubed on the same time last year.

🔥 We know these measures will do little to stop desperate people making dangerous journeys to the UK, because they do nothing to address the reasons people are forced from their homes.

🧡 The Government should reflect on the failures of this plan, and focus instead on operating an orderly, humane, and fair asylum system.

"The Home Office has said it will not allow a group of stranded refugee children to join their families in the UK if their cases do not make it through the Greek asylum system by 31 December when the EU family reunification programme comes to an end."

Desperate relatives in Britain plead with Home Office for flexibility as paperwork holdups delay family reunions while deadline looms

2,360.

That's the estimated number of people who have seen performances of Julie's ground-breaking Refugee Voices theatre project, where children and adults perform true stories of refugees to an audience.

That's a lot of people who have connected with the stranger through stories.

“It is unacceptable to house survivors of torture and human trafficking in unsanitary and unsuitable conditions. The use of barracks as refugee camps has been done without adequate risk assessment, proper vulnerability screening and specialist trauma-informed healthcare.”

Human rights groups demand action over the ‘unsanitary and unsuitable’ former barracks converted by the Home Office

Director Stephen Daldry says the project will be "a travelling festival of art and hope".
