Fire pits and chimineas can be a fun way to have an outside fire and keep warm on the summer nights. πŸ”₯

Follow our advice below πŸ‘‡
πŸ‘‰ Fire pits and chimineas are best used in a garden
πŸ‘‰ Make sure you put it in a well ventilated area, away from sheds, trees, bushes, compost bins or your house. Do not use on balconies
πŸ‘‰ Always follow the guidance provided
πŸ‘‰ Never use petrol, white spirit, paraffin or other flammable liquids to light it
πŸ‘‰ Keep the fire loading to a minimum
πŸ‘‰ Once lit, stay with it at all times. Keep children and pets away from it
πŸ‘‰ Make sure you have a bucket of water or sand nearby

After you've finished - coals and fire pit / chimenea containers can stay hot for hours. Do not attempt to move them until they've cooled down. Even a small amount of warmth can start a fire and cause significant damage.

People living with dementia are at higher risk of being involved in a fire, for example if they forget they are cooking.

1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia.

Check out Alzheimer's Society for information on ways you could support your loved ones.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service will provide a home fire safety visit to talk through any fire safety concerns, and can provide a free dementia band for a loved one. You can request it here πŸ‘‰ https://www.avonfire.gov.uk/our-services/home-fire-safety-visits

During 2019/2020 Avon Fire & Rescue Service attended over 40 incidents which involved candles and matches πŸ•―

Fires involving candles can be devastating.
Remember:

❌ Never leave burning candles unattended. Put burning candles out when you leave the room, and make sure they’re out completely at night.
❌ Don’t move candles once they are lit.
❌ Do not burn several candles close together as this might cause the flame to flare.
β˜‘οΈ Make sure you place candles on a stable surface, out of the reach of pets and children, and keep them away from flammable objects like curtains, furniture, bedding and books.
β˜‘οΈ Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
β˜‘οΈ Always put scented candles in a heat resistant holder. These candles are designed to liquefy when heated to maximise fragrance.

Fit a smoke alarm and test it regularly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999.
