🌟A community project to commemorate the Bearsden Shark with a statue in Bearsden town centre is looking for volunteers to help bring the project to life.

🦈 The Bearsden Shark Group has been progressing with its plans and permissions for a statue in Bearsden, and is now looking for extra people to join for a few months - whatever their skill set - to help with the final stages of fundraising and organisation.

The statue, which will appear outside the Hub in Bearsden, commemorates the finding, in 1982 at the site of the Manse Burn in Bearsden, of a 330-million-year-old fossil (Akmonistion zangerli) now widely know as the BEARSDEN SHARK). The shark skeleton is so uniquely well preserved that the last meal in its stomach could be seen. For more information on this exciting discovery please check www.bearsdenshark.co.uk

The group is about to launch a crowdfunder for the project, and would love to hear from anyone in the community who can spare just a few hours a month to help.

🌟 The Bearsden Shark Group took a table at the Westerton Gala Day held on 5 September 2026 to highlight the story of the discovery of the Bearsden Shark. 🦈

While younger children coloured in drawings of the shark and all ages took up the challenge of a short quiz (with a prize of real fossils) the question an answer sessions gave everyone a deeper understanding of this amazing story.

Thanks to the Milngavie & Bearsden Herald for featuring the Bearsden Shark on the front page of Thursdays paper.

Dr Neil Clark gave an interview recently on Talk Radio about the Bearsden Shark. If you are able to find it please do listen to it. It's very interesting.
