🚨 RED WEATHER WARNING ISSUED 🚨

As you may be aware, a rare Red Weather Warning for extreme heat has been issued across our area and much of southern and central England.

A Red Warning is the highest level of weather warning and indicates a potential danger to life.

We encourage everyone to enjoy the sunshine while taking sensible precautions.

If you’re heading to the coast, please remember to check tide times. Local tides can be unpredictable, with soft sand and sinking mud exposed at low tide. Despite the hot weather, sea temperatures can remain cold and cold water shock remains a serious risk.

Please help reduce the risks and stay safe:

💧Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
🧢 Wear a sun hat and apply sun cream regularly.
👥 Avoid going alone where possible.
💊 Check whether any medications you take may affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature or increase your risk of dehydration. This can include medicines such as Amitriptyline and others. If unsure, read the patient information leaflet or speak to your pharmacist.
👀 Keep an eye on children, older people and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.
🐾 Don’t forget your dogs and other pets. Ensure they have access to fresh water and shade at all times. Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day, as pavements and sand can become hot enough to burn paws. Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle, even for a short period.

If you get into difficulty along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

TEAM CATCH UP

We like to keep our supporters up to date with how the team are and what we are up to. We recognise it has been some time since we last posted and we would like to catch you up on the incidents we have attended. Moving forward we aim to make this more frequent and post per incident, if possible.

Alongside numerous call outs the team have been busy completing various training exercises during our Wednesday night training sessions. Our training includes Search, Casualty Care, Rope Rescue and Mud Rescue techniques. Our new recruits have also undertaken local knowledge patrols with our station officers ahead of the summer season and are settling in well within the team!

🚨CALL OUTS:🚨

APRIL 2026:
#20; 25 April - Tasked to assist a person with an ankle injury on Berrow Beach. Casualty was assessed by our team before being transported off the beach to safety. The casualty then made their own way to Hospital via a family member.
#21, 26 April - Tasked to assist Police with an incident in Bridgwater. During this we were then diverted back to Burnham on Sea Jetty to Assist Burnham on Sea Lifeboats with an Incident.
#22, 30 April - The team were alerted to a person in need of assistance on Burnham sea front by the Beach Warden. The team with the assistance of Avon and Somerset Police and South Western Ambulance service aided the person to safety and they were taken into the care of the ambulance service.

MAY 2026:
#23, 5 May - Tasked by Police to assist with a missing person search in Pawlett. After deploying the team into Search teams, news came through that the person had been located and in the care of Police.
#24, 15 May – Tasked to assist Police with a missing person search on Burnham beach, shortly after deploying our team, news came through they had been located and were in the care of the ambulance service.
#25, 20 May – The team were alerted to an incident unfolding on the jetty. Upon Arrival the team assisted the ambulance service where we aided the person to safety before handing the casualty over to the ambulance service.
#26, 25 May – Team were tasked to assist some kayakers in Uphill who had become cut off by the tide. The team aided the kayakers back to safety on Brean side of the River Axe where they were checked over and made their way back to their vehicles in Uphill.
#27, 30 May – The team were alerted to a small sailing yatch which had run aground in Burnham on Sea. Prior to our arrival news came through that the vessel had managed to self recover and our assistance no longer required.
#28, 31 May – Tasked to assist Weston Super Mare coastguard with a person stuck in mud. Whilst our team were making their way to the scene, news came through the casualty had now rached hard standing and was in the care of our Weston colleagues.

JUNE 2026:
#29, 3 June – Tasked to reports of a person stuck in mud by Burnham’s lower lighthouse. Burnham lifeboats were out training and made a diversion to assess the scene. Once we had arrived we confirmed the call was made with good intention but was infact a large log.
#30, 7 June – Tasked to assist Watchet Coastguard with reports of a dog over a cliff. Whilst on route to the scene our team received the news the dog was back on safe standing.
#31, 13 June – Tasked to assist Police with the search of a missing child. Whilst our team were kitting up ready to leave our station, news came through the child had been located safe and well.
#32, 16 June – Tasked to assist Watchet Coastguard and Police with the search of a missing person in Watchet. Whilst on route to the scene news came through that the person had been located and we subsequently returned to station.
#33, 22 June - Tasked to assist Weston Coastguard for a person stuck in mud at Uphill. Whilst on route we got the news the person was now safe and we returned to station.

As we move into peak season with higher footfalls on the beaches and warmer weather, please ensure you check tide times before attending the coast, remembering to stay hydrated and wear sun cream.

The last few weeks have been busy for our volunteers with ongoing training, annual qualifications and several callouts.

Our 3 new members are now fully qualified and operational members of the team. We have completed our annual CERCC (Coastguard Emergency Responder Casualty Care) and Rope rescue requalifications.
The team is at full strength of 13 members and, as always, on call 24/7.

📟Call Outs📟

7th March - 06:19 – Job 11/26 - Tasked to assist Weston Coastguard team with a missing person search, thankfully the Police quickly located them away from our search area.

14th March – 11:52 – Job 12/26. Called to a casualty who had fallen from their horse and injured their shoulder. After being assessed they were found to be well enough to be driven to hospital by their family for further treatment.

14th March – 15:45 – Job 13/26. Tasked to a young man stuck in mud by BOS yacht club. As they were just off the hard sand we managed to extract them with just a throw line. Once on safe ground , we checked they were all OK and then gave some safety advice.

18th March – 19:02 – Job 14/26. During the 2nd attempt of our First Aid requalification we were tasked to reports of a unknown object in the River Brue. After extensive searching alongside police and the RNLI nothing unusual was found. We were then stood down to return to our assessments.

20th March – 18:58 – Job 15/26. Tasked alongside RNLI, Police and Ambulance to reports of a person in the water. Just as we arrived they managed to get themselves back to safety and so we left them in the company of the local constabulary.

21st March – 20:35 – Job 16/26. Called by reports of people in the water by the lower lighthouse. Once on scene no one was in difficulty. A call made with good intent but a false alarm.

18th April –16:16 – Job 17/26. Tasked to someone in the mud near to the yacht club. They were part of a rugby team and teammates had managed to pull them to safety. When we arrived on scene, after checking everyone was ok, we gave the visitors some safety advice on the dangers of the mud and soft sand in that area.

19th April – 04:08 – Job 18/26. Called by a person who was lost and disorientated on the beach. They were quickly found and guided to safety.

19th April – 19:37 – Tasked to assist the Police with an incident on Burnham seafront.
