🚨Recognising Excellence🚨

The Royal Welsh is proud to congratulate two outstanding members of the 3rd Battalion whose exceptional service has been recognised through the award of a CGS Commendation and a CFA Commendation. Both have demonstrated leadership, commitment and professionalism well beyond the expectations of their roles, making a lasting contribution to their units and the wider Reserve force.

CGS Commendation

WO2 Paul Llewellyn R WELSH

WO2 Llewellyn consistently operated far above his rank as Training Warrant Officer, effectively covering an Executive Officer role for almost a year. He delivered complex training programmes, major deployments and innovative Reserve integration under sustained pressure. His leadership enhanced interoperability across Welsh Reserve units and beyond. His dedication and humility created enduring benefit to soldiers and capability.

CFA Commendation

CSgt Neil Jones(49) R WELSH

CSgt Jones was pivotal to re‑establishing A Company, 3 R WELSH in Wrexham, after a decade’s absence. He rebuilt infrastructure, logistics and community links from the ground up. His leadership regenerated Reserve presence and recruiting in Wrexham. A selfless reservist whose impact extended far beyond his remit.

These commendations recognise the significant impact that WO2 Llewellyn and CSgt Jones have made through their dedication and service. Their achievements have strengthened capability, supported their soldiers and enhanced the reputation of The Royal Welsh. We offer our sincere congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

Bearing the Hackle - LCpl Jones

Commencing his military career in 2018, LCpl Jones joined No. 2 Company, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards (Regular Army). During this time, he gained a wealth of experience, deploying on overseas exercises to the Falkland Islands and Kenya, as well as completing an operational tour of Iraq (Op Shader 14).

He left the Regular Army in 2023 and joined 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh as a Reservist a year later.

Since becoming a Welsh Warrior, he has completed his PJNCO cadre, participated in NATO exercises in Germany and Estonia, undertaken a battlefield study to Jersey, and taken part in the 2025 Nijmegen Marches, among other achievements.

Outside of Reserve life, LCpl Jones works as a Support Worker, assisting vulnerable youths on a daily basis.

His most memorable experiences include deploying to Kenya on exercise and receiving his promotion from Alun Wyn Jones.

His advice for anyone considering joining: “Take advantage of any opportunities that come along.”

Exercise Rampant Sweep

Over the weekend, our soldiers deployed to Sennybridge to conduct a Fighting in Woods and Forest (FIWAF) exercise in the heat.

The team worked through new doctrine while also reinforcing core skills, including the use of night vision systems, laser aiming modules, and the effective deployment of flares.

The exercise culminated in a final attack scenario, where every member demonstrated determination, professionalism, and strong teamwork throughout. A great effort from all involved.

Q. Do I have to join the Army?
A. Not at all. This event is all about giving you a real experience. If you do decide to join, we’ll be there to support you every step of the way.

Q. Do I need to be from Pontypridd to join?
A. No — as long as you can easily get to the Reserve Centre and are happy to travel, you’re welcome (subject to Army eligibility requirements).

Q. When does the event finish?
A. The evening will run until around 21:00–21:30. It’s structured so you can see everything, but you’re free to leave whenever suits you.
