Easy-To-Understand Guide On Stairwell AOV Systems:
A Stairwell AOV system (Automatic Opening Ventilator) is a mechanism that opens to reveal a free area of at least 1.0 square meters. Its main purpose is to provide ventilation, and it’s usually installed at the highest point of a stairwell in a building. They come in different types, including:
➡ Louvred vents
➡ Hatch vents
➡ Windows
➡ Roof windows
The relevance of a Stairwell Automatic Opening Ventilator (AOV) in buildings can’t be overstated, particularly due to its integral role in safety during fire incidents. This specialised ventilation system plays a dual role in small and large buildings, clearing smoke from stairwells and supplying fresh air for smoke extraction systems, respectively.
Fire emergencies often lead to the buildup of smoke in stairwells and communal areas. Smoke, apart from being harmful when inhaled, can obscure visibility and hinder evacuation efforts. Thus, the need for a system that can efficiently remove smoke becomes critical. This is where the stairwell AOV comes in, either working standalone or in conjunction with a smoke shaft system.
For residential buildings, stairwell AOVs are generally installed in the stairwells of apartment buildings where protecting common escape routes is vital. The specific requirements for these installations are laid out in Approved Document B of the Building Regulations 2013. These fall under two main categories:
1. For smaller buildings with a top floor less than 11m above ground and no more than three stories above ground level, an AOV is required at the top of the staircase that can be remotely controlled.
2. For larger buildings where the top floor exceeds 11m, a system to control smoke in corridors and communal areas linked to the escape stairwell is required. This can be achieved through natural ventilation using AOVs, mechanical smoke shaft systems, or pressurisation systems.
