Very happy to read this article about funding for an amazing new tool to help diagnose dementia earlier and hopefully improve the prospects of people living with dementia!

The test involves measuring brain waves while images are flashed on a computer screen.

What is it like to live with dementia, what are the causes and will there be a cure?

The author of this book was an incredible woman named Ben (real name Brenda but she preferred Ben, Benji, B, Benni and a few others!). This incredible woman, my mother, was one of the few people I have known who genuinely loved going to work. She used to tell me how lucky she was to have found a job that she had such a passion for, a job which also helped many many people. Through her work as a dementia specialist and trainer (for example training care home staff to improve the ways they work with people living with dementia, supporting family carers) she gained much much knowledge which she had a burning desire to share. Knowing how much it would help other people, Ben wrote this book. This was Ben’s parting gift and I’m very glad to be able to share it with the world. Please get in touch if you have any Qs or would like to order a copy. Email address: [email protected]

In chapter 2 ‘Diagnosing Dementia’ B talks about the different types of dementia.

“... dementia is an umbrella term for the symptoms occurring in a range of progressive brain diseases but the vast majority fall into one or more of 4 categories...

1. Alzheimer’s: between 50 - 75% of people with dementia will have an Alzheimer’s type dementia possibly alone or in combination with another type
2. Vascular dementia: present in about 30% of all dementias
3. Dementia with Lewy bodies: 10 - 20% of all dementias in England
4. Fronto Temporal Dementia: 5 - 7% of people with dementia in England”

She explains the key features of each dementia above and gives examples of different behaviours.

Please feel free to use this space to communicate with each other about your experiences of dementia, whether you are a person living with dementia or someone who gives support. Unfortunately B, the author, is not here to share her wisdom but hopefully the writing contained in this book should reveal her knowledge and help you on your journey. One of the first things B recommends in her book is to contact local support groups to try and engage with others in similar situations 💖

Dementia: A Practical Guide for Family Carers was written by Brenda Walker (aka Ben or B!) and published in 2018 with a mission to support those who support people with dementia. The book helps us to consider the experiences and perspectives of the person living with dementia and in so doing should assist carers in arriving at helpful responses to situations that are often far from easy. With informative text punctuated by real-life examples of day to day issues experienced by people living with dementia and their carers and supporters, the book delivers a rich and helpful guide for family carers that will also be useful for anyone else who provides care, support and friendship to people who are living with dementia.

Books are £12.99 plus £2 postage. Feel free to contact us on here or through our website/email for orders 😊
