Our operational officers have recently completed the Safe Working in Water training course. This programme focused on essential safety and rescue techniques, equipping officers with the skills and confidence to work safely in the inter-tidal area.

Training included:

🔷Self-rescue techniques
🔷Co-worker rescue methods
🔷Use of throw bags for safe retrieval
🔷Practical wading techniques
🔷Deployment of reach poles for assisted rescue

This training strengthens our commitment to safety and ensures our teams are well-prepared to manage risks when working in or near water.

North Western Protector was recently in dry dock undergoing routine maintenance. This essential work helps ensure the vessel remains fully operational, safe, and ready to continue supporting patrols across the district.

She is already back in the water, continuing our commitment to protecting the marine environment through proactive and intelligence-led activity.

The Association of IFCAs is seeking an experienced and dynamic Training Manager to lead the development and delivery of a national training programme supporting Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities across England.

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in strengthening compliance and enforcement capability, ensuring IFCA officers are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to protect our marine environment.

The role is hosted by Sussex IFCA for employment purposes, with national responsibilities through the Association of IFCAs.

💰 Salary: Grade 7/8 (£46,142 – £55,617 pay award pending)

This week, the Association of IFCAs launch their latest film, Conserve, exploring how IFCAs work to protect sensitive species and habitats in England’s inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), while ensuring sustainable fisheries can thrive.

The IFCAs, across 10 districts, have a responsibility to manage fishing activity within MPAs to ensure the conservation objectives of those sites are met.

The film highlights the IFCAs approach to MPA management:
• Backed by strong high-resolution data & local knowledge
• Collaborative decision-making, and meeting the MPA’s conservation needs
• Adaptive to changing conditions and new evidence

Produced by Mindfully Wired, Conserve follows the recently released IFCA film series Lead, Champion and Protect, continuing to showcase the work and efforts of IFCA officers and members to safeguard our marine environment and coastal communities.

Ana França , a journalist with Expresso, Portugal's largest weekly newspaper, is writing an article on post-brexit changes focusing on the fishing industry.

She would like to hear from fishers or other people who are/were involved in the industry and are willing to share their stories. It could include:

- Fishermen or exporters who had to fundamentally change their working lives after the new export rules came into force;

- People who kept going with resilience, even if the margins are much tighter now;

- Anyone who has found new solutions, new markets, different species, direct domestic sales;

- Voices from across the spectrum: those who voted Leave and feel the deal failed them, and those who never wanted to leave.
