On this day in 1812: Pedal-bicycle inventor Kirkpatrick Macmillan was born in Keir, Dumfriesshire. The Scots blacksmith designed a mechanical pedal system connected to his bike's rear wheel in his forge.

He rode his extremely-heavy invention 68 miles into Glasgow in June 1842. The trip took him two days and was not plain sailing. He knocked over a little girl in the Gorbals and was fined five shillings 💥🚲

CD Swimming Pool – a joint update from your three Ward 4 Councillors

In Dumfries and Galloway Council, major projected capital spends, like the £1.4 million upgrade to CD Swimming Pool, must go through three stages before they are fully approved. These are called Gateway stages.

Gateway 1 is when an outline business case is submitted. This has been completed.

Gateway 2 is when the project is formally approved at committee following a full review and received recommendation of Capital Investment Programme

Passing Gateway 2 happened today, and it’s great news!

The project now moves to Gateway 3 where funding will be made available for the development of a Full Business Case and detailed project design.

These detailed designs should be completed by the end of this year, which means Gateway 3 should be submitted to Committee for approval at the beginning of February 2027.

That final stage of approval will release the full funding for the upgrade. Following that, the work to upgrade CD Pool will begin.

So, while it’s been a long road, significant progress has been made today. Thank you for your patience and we will continue to keep you updated.

Councillors John Young, Pauline Drysdale and Iain Howie
