🌳 Today we announced some remarkable new discoveries at Ellisland, including a stand of mature Beech trees in the grounds that we believe were planted by Robert Burns himself.

The trees stand on the spoil bank above a watercourse Burns dug out as part of his agricultural improvements to the farm. Heritage forester Andrew Brown, who identified the significance of the trees, is confident that all the evidence points to these having been planted by Burns.

The trees are one of several new discoveries announced today. Forensic curatorial research inside the farmhouse has also confirmed that significantly more of Burns's original home survives than scholars had previously believed.

You can find out more about the trees, the farmhouse research and the wider story of Ellisland through our summer events programme, including a guided woodland walk with Andrew Brown on Wednesday 24 June, and a series of monthly Curator Led Tours of the farmhouse starting Tuesday 23 June. You'll find details on our website and Eventbrite - we'll pop direct links in the comments below.

A big thank you to the journalists who have already covered this story today, we have been delighted to see these important discoveries given such a warm reception.

Community organisations across Dumfries and Galloway are invited to access surplus furniture and equipment from the former Dumfries High School building.

As the school prepares for its move to the new campus, a variety of pieces of furniture and equipment have been identified as no longer required. Some items are being distributed to other schools in the region, and thereafter, items will be made available free of charge to community groups.

Community organisations are welcome to attend the old Dumfries High School on:

Monday 15 June – Wednesday 17 June 9:00am to 5:00pm

During this period, community groups may enter the building, identify any items they wish to take, and remove them on a first come, first served basis. All available furniture and equipment will be located on the ground floor for ease of access.

Please note:
All items must be collected no later than 5pm on Wednesday 17 June 2026.

If you wish to reserve items while arranging transport, please bring your own labels (e.g., post‑it notes or tags) to clearly mark what you intend to collect.

This is a great opportunity to access second‑hand furniture and equipment that may benefit your organisation.
