On 1st July 1916 at precisely 7.30am, tens of thousands of British soldiers went ‘over the top’ at the start of the Battle of the Somme, which was actually a series of battles lasting until 18th November.
By the end of the day there had been 57,470 casualties, of which 19,240 were killed, including six men from Cheadle.
To mark the 110th anniversary of the battle, a short service is to be held at Cheadle War Memorial on Wednesday 1st July at 7.30am. (Please gather by 7.25am).
