Do you agree with this policy from the Conservatives? Here in Cheshire West & Chester, under Labour, our planning position is so weak when it comes to gypsy/traveller sites that we have seen many unauthorised developments that end up getting planning permission basically because we have to grant. It's wrong and it shows contempt for law-abiding citizens who don't seek to abuse the planning system.

Those who break the rules must face consequences.

Yet a small minority of travellers are getting away with unauthorised development that would never be tolerated elsewhere. This is unfair.

The next Conservative Government will end the two-tier treatment of traveller lawbreaking and ensure the rules are enforced fairly.
Our plan will give police and councils stronger powers to remove unauthorised encampments, tackle trespass and stop the abuse of retrospective planning applications.

We will ensure councils act within 28 days of identifying an unauthorised residential caravan site, strengthen enforcement powers and restore protections for the Green Belt and open countryside.

We will also give police powers to remove trespassers at a landowner’s request, prevent travellers from returning to sites indefinitely and remove the requirement for an alternative pitch to be available before action can be taken.

One set of rules. Fair enforcement. Stronger powers for those responsible for enforcing the law.

Thank you Simon Eardley for Chester North and Neston for helping to tidy up this unsightly corner of Upton. Apparently it had been in this state for sometime. Did our own Upton Cllrs know or care about this?

ACTION! Being on Duttons Lane in Upton on Sunday evening, I noticed huge amounts of litter. Some of it – quite a lot as you’ll see – was picked last night and CWaC officers have confirmed they will arrange collection ASAP. Depressing to see, but a good hour of work to get it in a fit state for removal and disposal.

Good post from Simon Eardley for Chester North and Neston about the new ‘Upton Wildland’ area. Very welcome addition to the green spaces in and around Upton.

I was interested to drop by the 'Upton Wildland' off Acres Lane last night having been alerted to it a few weeks ago. It is good to see an initiative like this, with some quality hardware having been put into the field and its boundary, such as the high standard of 'kissing gate.' The area is stewarded by Redsun, an independent land developer. Several people were out exercising their dogs and there is a nicely established walkway around the site (natural, no artificial materials). Sadly some people are intent on abusing the wonderful wildlife opportunities that spaces like this present. Why would you leave an empty can of sweetcorn next to a pond!? (It is now safely in my recycling bin).

I will be interested to see how this mixed wild habitat will develop in the coming months and years - it contains wetland, scrubland, wild meadow and an orchard (I couldn't see whether that has been planted up as yet). As a lover of history (as well as wildlife), I was very interested to see the reference to the historic Roman Camp at the location. This gentle use of the land will help to preserve such a site (good news), although I don't know the extent of the archaeology or indeed what is known of the site from that perspective. Any insights Chester Archaeological Society?

The Chair of Upton Parish Council appears to have called another extra-ordinary (or emergency) meeting of the Parish Council on Monday. A few things to ponder here -

1) Why so many meetings? These come at a cost to the tax payer such as paying the Clerk for her attendance (although she didn't turn up for the last one)
2) The PC are looking to spend more money on consultants, This time for Health & Safety. Why is this needed and why is this seen as an emergency item?
3) The PC needs to renew their insurance arrangements. Surely this is a very basic annual requirement. Again why does this need to be covered in an extra-ordinary meeting. Has there been an administrative oversight?
4) This time any input from members of the public has been banned. This doesn't seem very democratic - are they afraid of awkward questions?

Sometimes it is really important to work with others to try and deliver change. That's why we were part of a cross-party call for action on unadopted estates at the full Council meeting last Thursday. Our colleague, Cllr Lynn Stocks, led our response to this issue based on experiences within her Weaver and Cuddington Ward.
