😷We don't want anyone to feel poorly over a bank holiday but if you do, please think whether ED is really the place you need to be.

👀ED is not always the best place to be. If you have a life threatening or emergency condition, or if you have deteriorated rapidly, then you should absolutely be in the department and being seen by our clinicians.

💊However, if your condition is less urgent, you’d probably be better off being seen by clinicians in one of the other places, faster.

➡️Please consider using alternative services for non-emergency health issues:

✅ Self-care: Manage minor ailments at home.
✅ Pharmacy: Get expert advice and over-the-counter treatments.
✅ GPs: Schedule an appointment for ongoing health concerns.
✅ NHS 111: Call or visit online for urgent medical advice.
✅ Urgent Treatment Centres: Urgent medical help when it’s not a life-threatening emergency.

👀 Today, we are pleased to launch a new infographic highlighting key figures and insights from the North Derbyshire Breast Screening Service.

The North Derbyshire Breast Screening Service is part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and invites approximately 20,000 women each year to attend routine breast screening appointments. The programme plays a vital role in supporting the early detection of breast cancer and helping to improve health outcomes for women across the region.

👩‍⚕️ Breast screening is designed to identify signs of breast cancer at the earliest possible stage, often before any symptoms are noticed or a woman becomes aware of a problem. Detecting cancer early can significantly increase treatment options and improve the likelihood of successful outcomes, often resulting in less invasive treatment and a better quality of life for patients.

The latest evidence shows that the NHS Breast Screening Programme is saving around 1,300 lives every year across England. Research also indicates that for every 200 women who attend screening, one life will be saved. These figures underline the importance of accepting your invitation and attending your screening appointment when called.

🩷 Regular screening remains one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, giving women the best possible chance of receiving prompt treatment and achieving positive outcomes. We encourage everyone who is invited to take up the opportunity to attend their appointment and support the continued success of this life-saving programme.

🎉 It gives our Trust Members a chance to celebrate the amazing work and improvements taking place across the Trust every year, and to ask questions of our leadership team.

🌟 Our marketplace will be returning, giving colleagues a space to showcase their department, and will be open before the meeting begins for browsing and the opportunity to ask questions and find out more.

Our Emergency Department is very busy today, and may not be the best place to come if your condition isn’t an emergency.

👩‍⚕️ We always prioritise patients by clinical need, so those who are most unwell are seen first. This means the waiting room might look quiet, even when our teams are working intensely behind the scenes with patients who need urgent care.

🏥 In this video, Stacie, our Emergency Department Matron, takes you on a tour of the department and the areas where our sickest patients are treated.

👉So - how can you help us right now and ensure that you or your loved one gets the care they need?

➡️ED is not the place to be if you need care that is not urgent or life threatening. We are absolutely here for you if you need us in emergency or life-threatening cases, or if someone has deteriorated rapidly – but please help us to relieve some of the pressure on our services if you could be seen somewhere else such as a GP, NHS111, a community pharmacy or an Urgent Treatment Centre.

🏠If your loved one is an inpatient with us and getting ready for discharge, then please make sure that everything is in place for their return home and speak with our colleagues to make sure that you know what they need. about discharge and what you need to do to support this.

👉Our services are very busy today and we're asking you to you really need if you need treatment today.

👀ED is not always the best place to be. If you have a life threatening or emergency condition, or if you have deteriorated rapidly, then you should absolutely be in the department and being seen by our clinicians.

💊However, if your condition is less urgent, you’d probably be better off being seen by clinicians in one of the other places, faster.

🩺You see, here in ED, we prioritise patients on clinical need and our most poorly patients will be seen by a clinician in one of our specialist areas: Majors, Resus or in our Ambulance Assessment Area. Children have a specific paediatric area, designed to keep them entertained and as calm as possible whilst they wait to be seen.

🚑These areas are behind the main waiting area so, even though the initial ambulatory (walk in) area may not look busy, it is likely that, behind the doors, there are patients needing specialist care having suffered a medical episode or trauma and our clinicians will be supporting them to ensure that they are stabilised and treated as quickly as possible.

⏰So, if your condition doesn’t need emergency treatment you may wait longer to see someone – and get back home.
