🐾 A gentle reminder for our lovely visitors with dogs 🐾

We absolutely love seeing your four-legged companions enjoying the countryside with you here at Ingleborough Cave. To help us protect the special wildlife and other visitors around the site, we kindly ask that all dogs are kept on a lead while using the nature trail, as is standard.

We’d also really appreciate dogs remaining on leads beyond the trail areas, as there are currently ground-nesting birds in the surrounding countryside and livestock grazing nearby. Even the friendliest dogs can unintentionally disturb wildlife or worry animals.

Thank you so much for helping us care for this beautiful landscape and for being considerate of other visitors, farmers, and the wildlife that call this place home. We truly value your support. 🌿

🦇 BREAKING NEWS FROM INGLEBOROUGH CAVE 🦇

After months of mysterious noises echoing through the passages, our guides have finally identified the cause…

We have discovered a previously unknown species living deep inside the cave.

Introducing the Yorkshire Echo Bat.

Unlike ordinary bats, this rare creature doesn’t use echolocation to find its way around — it uses it to complain about the price of tea, the weather, and how things were better in 1974.

Visitors this morning reported hearing:
“Eeeh, it’s a bit nippy in here.”
“They don’t make stalactites like they used to.”
“And whose round is it?”

Our team is monitoring the situation closely and considering whether to offer them seasonal employment as tour guides.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Geoff Yeadon — a caver / cave diver whose determination, skill, and quiet perseverance helped shape the story of Ingleborough Cave as we know it today.

In the 1980s, Geoff played a central role in one of the most significant achievements in British caving — the successful linking of Gaping Gill and Ingleborough Cave. It was a breakthrough that came after more than 100 years of exploration, digging, surveying, and persistence by generations of cavers who believed the connection must exist. When that link was finally made, it was not just a technical triumph, but the culmination of a century of effort and dedication beneath Ingleborough.

He did not achieve this alone. Geoff was joined in that historic breakthrough by Geoff Crossley, Julian Griffiths and Jim Abbot — a team whose combined determination and teamwork made the connection possible, and whose achievement remains a milestone in the history of caving in the Yorkshire Dales.

Those who knew Geoff speak of his humility, his steady presence underground, and his deep love for the caves of the Yorkshire Dales. His legacy lives on every time visitors walk through the passages he helped reveal, and every time cavers push a little further into the unknown.

From all of us connected to Ingleborough Cave, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s family, friends, and fellow cavers. Thank you, Geoff, for the paths you opened and the inspiration you leave behind.

To watch the remarkable breakthrough, the video link will be in the comments section below ⬇️

🔦 Before electricity, there was candlelight

When the caves were first opened to visitors in the 19th century, tours were lit entirely by candles and oil lamps.

Shadows flickered across the rock formations, creating an atmosphere that many described as magical — and sometimes a little eerie.

Guides had to carefully manage their light sources, as running out of flame underground was a very real concern.

Thankfully, modern lighting now lets visitors see the cave in all its detail — but the spirit of those early candlelit adventures still lingers.

🏔️ The man who helped open the underground world of Ingleborough

Long before modern lighting and safe pathways, Victorian landowner and explorer James Farrer was already venturing deep beneath Ingleborough.

In 1837, driven by curiosity, he and his companions broke through a natural barrier inside the cave — revealing passages that had been hidden for thousands of years. Armed with ropes, candles, and remarkable determination, they pushed further into the darkness than anyone before them.

In his own exploration notes, Farrer recorded the moment their progress was finally halted by rising water, writing:

"…the passage becomes so low with such depth of water as at present to defy further progress."

Despite the dangers, these early expeditions opened up a spectacular underground world that visitors still enjoy today — nearly two centuries later.

History runs deep beneath Ingleborough. 🪨
