A rescue team is only one part of effective rescue provision.

For specialist rescue arrangements to work in practice, the people on site need to be supported by appropriate planning, equipment and technical understanding.

That's why our involvement can begin well before the work itself.

We work alongside client teams to understand the task and environment, consider how a rescue could practically be carried out, identify the capability and equipment required, and help ensure the arrangements are appropriate for the project.

Then, when dedicated rescue cover is required, our experienced teams arrive with an understanding of the operation they're there to support.

It's a joined-up approach designed to complement the client's safe system of work rather than operate separately from it.

This is what specialist rescue capability looks like in practice.

Confined space environments can mean restricted movement, limited visibility, complex access and very little room to work. When several people, pieces of equipment and existing infrastructure all occupy the same space, effective teamwork becomes essential.

Clear communication, defined roles and an understanding of the environment all contribute to keeping an operation controlled and coordinated.

Our teams are made up of experienced serving and recently retired firefighters, bringing practical operational experience into challenging environments like these.

Because technical rescue isn't only about having the right equipment. It's about having people who know how to work together when the environment makes the job more difficult.

The value of stand-by rescue cover is readiness.

During confined space operations where dedicated rescue provision is required, an emergency isn't the time to start establishing who will respond, what equipment is needed or how a casualty will be recovered.

Those arrangements need to exist beforehand.

Effective stand-by rescue provision means having competent personnel available, appropriate equipment prepared and a clear understanding of the environment, task and rescue arrangements.

It provides the capability for an immediate response should an emergency occur, while supporting the safe system of work throughout the operation.

For clients, it's also an important part of ensuring suitable emergency arrangements are in place and meeting their health and safety obligations.

The aim is always for the rescue team not to be needed. The important part is being ready if they are.

A plan gives you a starting point. But real environments don't always remain exactly as planned.

Conditions can change. New hazards can emerge. Access can become more difficult. The situation facing a rescue team may not look exactly like the scenario anticipated beforehand.

That's where operational experience becomes particularly valuable.

Our rescue personnel are experienced serving firefighters, accustomed to assessing developing situations, communicating clearly within a team and making considered decisions under pressure.

It's a skill set developed through genuine operational experience and brought into the technical rescue environments we support.

Planning remains fundamental. But so does having people capable of responding appropriately when reality doesn't follow the plan perfectly.

Technical competence gets you prepared. Operational experience helps you adapt.

A confined space doesn't exist in isolation.

On a live operational site, work may be taking place alongside functioning plant, ongoing processes, vehicle movements, other contractors and teams carrying out completely separate activities.

That wider environment matters.

Changes elsewhere on site can potentially affect access, communication, hazards or the practical implementation of emergency arrangements.

It's why good rescue provision requires awareness beyond the immediate entry point.

AGO teams regularly support works across live water, utilities, industrial and infrastructure environments. Working effectively in these settings means integrating with the wider site operation, understanding interfaces with other activities and maintaining awareness throughout the job.

Sometimes the space itself is only one part of the operational picture.

This week we were asked to step in at short notice to provide confined space rescue cover during internal welding works inside a reactor at a COMAH site.

Having only a couple of days to prepare didn't change the approach. The rescue arrangements, entry control and planning still had to be in place before anyone entered the reactor.

Once the work got underway, our team remained on site throughout the operation, providing dedicated rescue cover.

Sometimes the timescales are shorter. The planning shouldn't be.

Our work doesn't begin when the rescue van arrives on site.

Before mobilising for a project, there's important work to be done to understand what we're supporting.

What is the task? Where is it taking place? What are the access and egress arrangements? What hazards need to be considered? What rescue scenarios could reasonably arise? What personnel and equipment will be required?

The answers help determine what appropriate rescue provision looks like for that particular operation.

That preparation also means our teams arrive with an understanding of their role and the capability required, rather than trying to establish everything once the work is ready to begin.

At AGO Fire & Rescue, we believe good rescue provision should be considered, proportionate and operationally ready.

The work you see on site is only part of the job.

Some working environments are more challenging than others.

Restricted access, awkward entry points and complex surroundings can all influence how work is carried out – and how an emergency response would need to be managed.

That's why understanding the environment is such an important part of confined space and technical rescue operations.

Our teams work across a wide variety of sites, from reservoirs and water treatment works to chambers, tunnels, industrial facilities and infrastructure projects.

Each environment brings different considerations, requiring the team to remain aware, prepared and ready to adapt to the conditions in front of them.

For us, integrity in rescue provision means recommending what a project actually needs.

Not every confined space requires the same level of rescue provision, and not every project presents the same operational challenges.

That’s why our approach starts with understanding the work.

We look at the environment, the task being carried out, the risks involved and the practical requirements of a potential rescue. From there, the aim is to establish rescue arrangements that are proportionate and appropriate for the operation.

Preparedness is equally important. When specialist rescue capability is required, the people, equipment, planning and procedures need to be ready before the work gets underway.
