A quick refresher on rescue planning for confined space work.
Under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, suitable and sufficient rescue arrangements must be prepared before anyone enters a confined space.
While not every confined space requires a dedicated standby rescue team, those that do need rescue provision that is appropriate for the specific risks involved.
Effective rescue planning considers factors such as the environment, access and egress, the work being carried out, potential hazards and how a casualty could be recovered safely if an emergency occurs.
Where specialist rescue capability is required, relying on external emergency services is not an appropriate rescue arrangement. That's where experienced standby rescue teams play a vital role.
