** Excellent event in Convoy last night **

There was a great crowd at the excellent Donegal Railway Museum event in Convoy last night on 'Railways of East Donegal'. We're very grateful to the Museum for letting us speak at the end about our efforts to bring rail back to the county. Great interest shown in rail - both past & future 👍

** 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗟 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗨𝗠 - 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗼𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 **

Fantastic to join fellow rail enthusiasts Donegal Railway Heritage Museum last night in Convoy for their event on 'The Railways of East Donegal'. A great crowd turned out for what was a really informative event.

We're also very grateful to the Museum for letting us say a few words at the end about 'Into The West' and the work we're doing to bring rail back to . A vey receptive audience who are keen to see Donegal & the north-west put back on the island's rail map again 👍

** 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗜𝗘 𝗠𝗰𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗨𝗘 𝗧𝗗 **
We met Fianna Fáil Donegal TD - Minister Charlie McConalogue - on Monday in to discuss what is needed to bring rail back to Donegal.

It was a very helpful and productive meeting, and the key points we raised were :

𝟭) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲-𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗻𝘆-𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲. Particularly in light of the recent 'Shared Island' announcement of significant funding for lots of rail maintenance in NI (plus rail work in Dublin), but nothing at all for Donegal.

𝟮) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 £𝟳𝟰𝗺/€𝟴𝟲𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆-𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 '𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆' i.e. that the £74m it saves NI's Department for Infrastructure is ring-fenced to be spent ONLY on future rail projects in the north-west. Otherwise Dublin will have triggered a REDUCTION in DFI spending in the north-west.

𝟯) 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵-𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 - from Letterkenny and Derry to Portdown, via Tyrone - 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, with Dublin contributing towards the cost of the Derry-Portadown leg.

The Minister agreed to raise these issues wiht the Taoiseach's office and Shared Island Unit

Tomorrow, we'll be launching our full programme of events for Heritage Week (15th - 23rd August), and as you'll see we have a packed programme of talks, family-friendly events, demonstrations, and even drama! Before the full launch, we wanted to get the word out about this event that we'll be holding in Convoy's Black Memorial Hall on Wednesday 19th August at 7pm.

In the coming weeks, we'll be putting a call out to the community around East Donegal for photographs, stories, artefacts, or anything else that might help us tell the story of the Strabane Letterkenny Railway and the other lines that made their way through that part of the country. This event will feature a presentation (with photographs) on the history of the railways in the region, but it is also intended as a way of bringing the community together to share their memories and local knowledge on the subject. So if you or anyone you know is from that part of the world and has a story to tell, please let them know about this event and help us spread the word all the way from Convoy and Cornagillagh to Carrigans and Castlefinn - to name just a few places on the agenda for the evening!

** 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗡 𝗙𝗘́𝗜𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦 **

Into The West and Letterkenny Friends of the Earth combined to meet with Sinn Féin Ireland Donegal reps Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD and Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle on Monday in . It was a really helpful session, at which the case for bringing rail back to Letterkenny was discussed at length.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲-𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗻𝘆-𝗗𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 - particularly in light of the recent 'Shared Island' announcement of significant funding for lots of rail maintenance projects in NI plus rail work in Dublin, but nothing at all for Donegal.
