SMELLS

A few people have raised the issue of smells in the village and they are often from the direction of the airfield. This is obviously an issue that has come and gone over the years.

Clearly sometimes smells will just relate to farmers fields which is a natural part of the countryside. Farmers are governed by rules on what they can spread on fields and they must be considerate - if it is piled up then have it as far from residents as possible and spread it promptly etc.

However assuming it is not just routine country business the below details will hopefully be of use when people want to report things:

The main responsible organisation is the Environment Agency and smells can be reported to their 24/7 incident hotline 0800 80 70 60 or via website. They have a national call centre that monitors every report, assesses it and sends it to the relevant team. The centre operates 365 days so residents will always be able to speak with someone. They will only deploy an officer on the same day of the report if they get multiple reports of the same pollution. However, every report is good data that they use for investigation and if necessary, as evidence when they prosecute companies responsible for environmental pollution.

The City of York Council contact is [email protected] or 01904 551567. If Ian is away from his desk, which can be often as it is a small department, the best contact is [email protected] or the number 01904 551525.

If it relates to Yorkshire Water the advice is to call the contact centre on 0345 124 2424. The contact centre operates standard hours, but when its closed there is an option to raise an emergency. Should an odour therefore occur outside of the operating times of the contact centre, residents are able to be redirected to the control room. A serious or persistent odour would be classed as an emergency, so we would encourage residents to do this.

🚧 Plan ahead for works on Bishopthorpe Road this August

We're investing in improvements to Bishopthorpe Road, including new traffic lights, improved drainage, refreshed road markings and road resurfacing to help make journeys smoother and safer for everyone.

Phase 1 works will take place from 3 to 13 August 2026, with works mainly taking place 9am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm at weekends.

⚠️ What to expect?

There will be a Southbound-lane closure on Bishopthorpe Road 24/7 throughout Phase 1.
There will be a full overnight road closures in both directions on 4 and 5 August, from 8pm to 6am.

Ebor Street will be closed during working hours for drainage works – though residents will retain access.

đźš— Motorist diversion: Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street and Scarcroft Road
🚲 Cyclist diversion: Darnborough Street, Cherry Street and Vine Street
🚌 Bus services 11, 15 and 21 will be diverted. The Bishopthorpe Road Shops bus stop will also be temporarily suspended, with a temporary stop provided on Scarcroft Road outside St Clement's Church.

Remember:

âś… Businesses will remain open
âś… Pedestrian access will continue via temporary crossing points
âś… Signed diversions will be in place

Please allow extra time for your journey and plan ahead before you travel. Thank you for your patience while we carry out these important improvements.
